Long live The 39 Clues!

Seven Cahill agents from different branches of the family have risked their lives to publish the 10 volumes of the clue hunt: Rick Riordan, Gordon Korman, Peter Lerangis, Patrick Carman, Jude Watson, Linda Sue Park and Margaret Peterson Haddix. They did it to protect the Cahill family. But the dangers aren't over yet. An ancient enemy known as the Vespers is creeping around, and Agent Riordan calls the other six rogue agents together again. This time, they will assemble a book of Cahill secrets as a weapon against the Vespers.

This secret book contains everything anyone would want to know about the five different Cahill branches, including overviews, secret history strategies, founders, stronghold locations, members' biographies, preferred weapons, drawings and photos. There are also some agent updates, like how Dan and Amy are back at school and Dan keeps getting in trouble, and when Nellie takes the siblings to visit their parents' graves for the first time since the funeral. Compiling all of this important information into one place is dangerous, but it may be the only thing to save the Cahill family from the evil Vespers.

Set up like an encyclopedia, THE BLACK BOOK OF BURIED SECRETS is filled with colorful pages containing lots of photos and drawings. There are even some riddles scattered throughout to solve. Readers will also enjoy the brief narratives giving updates on some of the family members and a few narrative flashbacks in the Founder Archives. And in following the pattern of the 39 Clues series, it also contains interesting biographies of some historical figures, including Harry Houdini, Annie Oakley and Marie Curie. The introduction cleverly explains that the 10 previous books were written by Cahill agents (otherwise known as the authors) in a desperate attempt to protect the family. And in a further act to protect the family, they gather again to put together this book of information because there's an ancient enemy lurking to destroy them.

All of this leads up to a new series, The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers, the first installment of which will release in April. Long live The 39 Clues!

Nice Addition to the 39 Clues World

A companion book to the popular 39 Clues series, The 39 Clues: The Black Book of Buried Secrets is a good bet, not only for the series' most die hard fans, but for those of us seeking some closure to a few of the threads left dangling at the end of The 39 Clues, Book 10: Into the Gauntlet. The book answers some questions, forces us to ask a few new ones, dangles a few new mysteries in our faces and gives us a chance to catch up with several of the series' major players since Gauntlet's end.

Touted as the "ultimate guidebook" to the 39 Clues world, this is also a full color reference book to the fictional Cahill family, their various branches and to the history, famous historical members, founders and current agents of each branch. Information on branch strategies, strengths and strongholds, etc. is nicely laid out and more fun to read than I expected it to be. Author Rick Riordan, who wrote the first book in the 39 Clues series as well as the overall series arc has given us an attractive and interesting series overview that I'm happy to add to my collection even though I consider the "ultimate guidebook" description to be just a bit of a stretch.

The Black Book of Buried Secrets also serves as a bridge to - wouldn't you know it? - a new 39 Clues series set to launch in April, 2011 with The 39 Clues: Vespers Rising, the first volume in The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers. In the new series, the Cahills will have to band together to protect their secrets from the Vespers, another large (and reportedly quite evil) family who have been watching the Cahills for years and are determined to uncover and steal the sources of their power. After Vespers Rising, the series consists of six additional books that will be published between August 2011 and March 2013 from authors Gordon Korman, Jude Watson, Peter Lerangis, Roland Smith, Linda Sue Park and (!!) David Baldacci.

Minor & Totally Personal Quibble: As someone who only read the books and wasn't involved with the website or the cards that were parts of the 39 Clues world, I hadn't come across the photos of the characters before and I have to say, I'm not a real fan of them. I guess I prefer the images my own mind created of Dan & Amy (and everyone else) and that preference made the photos somewhat distracting for me. But, like I said, a minor quibble.

A Summary of the Books so Far . . . and a Prologue for a New 39 Clues Series

If you are like me, you probably read each novel in the 39 Clues series at high speed. I wanted to find the next clue, to see who would be a double-dealer next, and to learn who had done what to whom in the past. As a result, a lot of the details didn't exactly stick like glue in my head. If so and you cherish the stories, you'll appreciate having a chance to see a lot of the information you've read presented in a more organized, concise form in The Black Book of Buried Secrets. You'll also see lots of veiled references to the Vespers.

Surprise, surprise! There's a new 39 Clues series coming beginning with Vespers Rising by Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, and Jude Watson on April 5, 2011. Naturally, you'll need to refer back to the Black Book of Buried Secrets to make the most sense out of that new series.

So if you liked the first ten books, this eleventh one is an essential reference for the next series of ten.

The book has a tongue-in-cheek opening where Rick Riordan provides a fictional story for the book's origin in his role as a Janus operative. From there, you read profiles of the Madrigal, Lucian, Ekaterina, Tomas, and Janus branches of the Cahill family starting with a brief summary and then looking at the founders, continuing with the agents, and ending with descriptions of their home bases. Some of the fictional stories about founders and agents are quite humorous.

The book is illustrated with photographs and images of some of the characters. These were unpleasant surprises in some cases because the people didn't look to me the way the stories had portrayed them. See what you think of the photograph of Grace Cahill, for instance. I'm not sure I would have wanted her to be my grandmother.

A few of the descriptions of historical figures looked to me as if they came out of Classics Illustrated comic books rather than history books. So don't plan to write any school papers for history class based on these thumbnail sketches.

But it's all in good fun. Have a ball!

Easy to read and very inspiring!

I visited Anne's classroom after reading this book, and she described it perfectly in this book. It really made me rethink the way I teach art and am now considering ways to infuse more choice into my art room. This book was an easy read with great video clips and lots of wonderful ideas. I highly recommend it for art teachers or aspiring art teachers.

I would have loved this as a required book in my art education classes in college. There are great ideas, examples, and tools shared through out the chapters that are applicable to every classroom.

About the Author
Shanny Jean Maney is both a performance poet and teacher. With Robbie Q. Telfer, she co-founded The Encyclopedia Show, a radical literary reading/spectacular which now runs in venues all across the globe. In March of 2010, the Chicago Encyclopedia Show won the Orgie (short for Original) Theatre Award for 2009's "Best Creation/Curators." Maney continues to co-curate the original show in Chicago.

You are worth real butter. Do you have a cast iron skillet? Everyone should have a cast iron skillet. If you own one piece of kitchen equipment, make it a cast iron skillet. They are cheap and strong. You are worth a cast iron skillet. Youʼve gotta see where this is going. Make the dough. Smack it into the skillet. Bake the skillet ʻtil the cookie is done. 375°F? 25-35 minutes? Youʼll know. Call your honey over. If your cute sweetie doesnʼt swoon over that yum-cookie smell and smooch you on the spot, think long and hard. Go ahead. Iʼll wait. If the butterʼs not butter, itʼs not butter. If the cookieʼs not done, itʼs not good. If your sweetie ainʼt sweet, start over. Ainʼt more complicated than that.

Music to my brain!

I wish I could do the video review for this book (my computer is not sciencey enough). You would see a gigantic I-Love-Science!-induced grin across my face. Friendly, accessible poetry that you can enjoy on the surface or choose to dig deeper and consider over a drink. A great book to read through, then keep on your nightstand to pick through before bed. I highly recommend this compact and concentrated volume for your collection. The only knock I have is the cover. Sad to see a kid get shot by light like that. A bit too graphic for me.

You can do it

Sometimes we say things. Like "I hate poetry." Then we readr things like Shanny's book and we say "Oh. Nevermind. Remember that thing I said? Totally not true."

This collection of poems will make you laugh out loud. Embarrassingly loud. In public. Then. You'll cry. I promise you. If you have any heart within you. Your soul will reach out and hug the author...and she will feel the embrace.

You can read poetry. You can do it.

I had anxiously been awaiting the publication of this book. I was GIDDY when it showed up on the

I think this might be one of the most artfully crafted books in Write Bloody's cannon. The organization using the scientific process . . . I thought it was gimmicky but logical when I flipped through the book, but after reading it, it is so, so perfect. The way that poems overlap and reference each other, the way the order of the poems allows them to converse and inform each other, the way certain poems that are contradictory to that moment in the narrative rest perfectly and seem perfect and right and breathe and good.

It's such a good book. It is so artful, and not just the poems (which are, yes, yes), but the way every choice, every placement, helps create this narrative. The way living is so hard and so precious and so simple.

As a writer, it is intimidating. As someone who strives to do those things, it is encouraging. As a poet with a billion different poems about a billion different things, it makes a book feel so far off. It also makes me want to try. As a female writer and performance artists, I am very aware of how hard it can be to be truthful about the female experience, and Ms. Maney does it with such tenderness, humor, and hope. The exploration of her miscarriage and the careful living done in its wake make "The Real Monster" one of the most heart-breaking moments in poetry that I've ever experienced.

My heart broke a million times. It also healed in the most magnificent and honest ways.

This book is intelligent, sincere, accessible, hilarious, well crafted, honest, and full of everything I aspire to as a woman and a writer. It turned my heart into a prism, and I can ask nothing more of a book.

B J Smith is an educational consultant and was formerly Head of School of Building at Ulster Polytechnic.

Margaret Hollins is Deputy Head of the Urban, Environment and Leisure Studies Department at London South Bank University.

I first came across John Perkins's Confessions of an Economic Hit Man a few years ago when I was living and working in Abu Dhabi, a tiny city-state which serves as the capital of a conglomerate of similar city-statesincluding Dubaiall collectively known as the United Arab Emirates, or the UAE, which itself is located on the eastern coast of the Arabian peninsula.

And although the UAE had been peaceful and prosperous for many decades, I couldnt help but think about the fact that I was in the middle of the most dangerously volatile and highly militarised region on Earth.

The year was 2008. The war in Iraq was still rumbling on and, in my more paranoid moments, I thought the conflict could escalate in a flash and instantly embroil other countries in the region.

What I did not spend a single moment worrying about, however, was the unprecedented terror caused by the global economic crisis. Who did? I didnt think about it because, unlike armies, banks and financial institutions are forces of a largely invisible kind of activity. And I never knew finance could cause so much devastation.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website.

He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers.

Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

The job of EHMs (and their colleagues) is to persuade countries to take out loans worth billions of dollars, often to pay for infrastructure projects that the EHMs themselves recommend, writes John Perkins in his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.

If the persuasion tactics of the EHMs fail, the CIA "jackals", as he calls them, take over and often assassinate the leaders of governments who do not co-operatesuch as Jaime Roldos, president of Ecuador, and Omar Torrijos, president of Panama.

Perkins starts his story by wondering how he had grown up to be involved in such a "dirty business". He remembers Ann, and her uncle, Frank, who suggests working for the NSA and being a Peace Corps Volunteer.

Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website. He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers. Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born. Abdul briefly worked for a New York-headquartered cable television channel called AsiaNet as a news editor, and realised that although he loves researching, writing and other "technical" parts of a journalist's job, he does not like presenting, preferring to be behind the camera or back in the studio. He also realised that, although reporting a story through the medium of television is obviously different from telling it through a newspaper or magazine, the heart and mind of every media company is researching and writing. In his spare time, Abdul likes to spend time with his family, cooking, eating, watching films, listening to music, reading and writing. When he goes out he likes to watch movies at the best cinemas, see live music performances, and eat at good restaurants. He also loves gardening, fishing and going for long walks.

About the Author
Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.
 
Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.
 
Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.
