His itch for extended blue water sailing had never gone away. So he bought a 40-foot wooden ketch from a Portland Yacht Club buddy to scratch the itch that carried him around the world, then half way around again by the time he turned 80.
He kept a meticulous log and a diary, so the reader easily can track his 13-year voyage and re-live an adventure that ranged from beautiful discoveries to 10 cyclones/hurricanes. Winters was by no means an amateur sailor. He spent most of his life sailing the Columbia River, the coastal regions of the Pacific Ocean and crewing aboard club boats in the TransPac race to Hawaii.
A home builder by occupation, Winters could build, fix or invent his way out of any situation, and there was no shortage of opportunities aboard WINDJOB, his beloved home on water that suffered dismasting, pirate attacks, groundings, gear failures too numerous to mention, and perennial crew problems. Winters navigated by sextant and dead reckoning with a little help from instruments that would be considered rudimentary by today's standards.
But this Old Salt was never discouraged, never thought of giving up, and always would rather be at sea than on dry land. He made innumerable friends from other cruising yachts and ashore. He had a way with the ladies, was a consistent host at parties aboard WINDJOB, and never failed to keep his rum locker full no matter where he ventured around the world.
CRUISIN' BOOZIN' SNOOZIN is a great adventure story, and a good reference for sailors planning or dreaming about a life at sea.

Great Summer Read!

I love this guy, and since he's a member (though long gone) of my yeact club it was fun to read about his adventures-or misadventures. Even if you are not an avid sailor, you will enjoy his exploits, laugh at his crustiness, and applaud his adventurous soul. To start a trip around the world at his age inspires me to "go for it".
