Perspectives on Biblical Inerrancy

This book touches on a core aspect of evangelicalism: Biblical Inerrancy. It is one that has generated heated debates and controversies, culminating in the departure of several prominent theologians in the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) not too long ago. The Geisler-Gundry debate and subsequent departures is one such case in point. The central issue is inerrancy or the interpretive positions on it. Core to this is the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy (CBSI) in which all members of the ETS are to subscribe to it. Literally. For many, this foundational stance defines who and what exactly is an evangelical. As the title of this collection of essays suggests, there are at least five broad opinions, ranging from the strictly literal understanding to a loosely defined perspective.

The Format
==========
In setting the stage for the debates, editors Stephen Garrett and J Merrick bring together five prominent theologians from different theological schools to share their views on the following:
How do they define Biblical inerrancy?
What is their take on the CBSI statement with regards to 4 aspects?
(1) God and his relationship to his creatures
(2) the doctrine of inspiration
(3) the nature of Scripture,
(4) the nature of truth.

Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary kicks off the discussion with a classical statement of biblical inerrancy that states that every word in the Bible is exactly what God had said. He insists that because this doctrine is core to the evangelical belief, the evangelical movement is entirely dependent on upholding its truth, literally. Human criterion of judgment on the Bible is frowned upon, which is why he is particularly hostile to any modern scholarship that casts doubt on the texts. He asserts, echoing Dr JI Packer's words that: "is word for word God-given; its message is an organic unity, the infallible Word of an infallible God, a web of revealed truths centered upon Christ; it must be interpreted in its natural sense, on the assumption of its inner harmony; and its meaning can be grasped only by those who humbly seek and gladly receive the help of the Holy Spirit."

Peter Enns' essay comes next which flips to the other end of the spectrum. A biblical scholar, especially on the Old Testament, Enns comes out swinging, saying that while the Bible is one grand narrative, there are divergent views and theologies, and he argues that the classical understanding of inerrancy undermines the very nature of God's truth. He has harsh words, accusing proponents of the literal biblical inerrancy camp as prempting dialogue, obstructs self-criticism, and is not sufficiently nuanced to consider modern findings.

Michael Bird's essay is positioned as something in an "international perspective," although Bird hails from Australia, and strictly speaking speaks from a particular Australian Christianity standpoint. He prefers not to rank biblical inerrancy too highly, choosing to be more committed to the "infallibility and authority of Scripture" instead. The CBSI statement is not to be ranked as doctrinal. Rather, it is a statement of “total truth and trustworthiness of Holy Scripture." In doing so, he avoids trapping himself in a literal world, and is able to nuanced the interpretations of biblical inerrancy without having to exercise harmonization of discrepancies or adopt any position of doctrinal arrogance. He makes a good point in warning us not to manipulate the theological positions o fthe former heroes of faith to justify our own positions. He has one word for American-style classical inerrancy: "Theological Colonialism."

Kevin Vanhoozer's "Augustinian Inerrancy" is a careful navigation through literary meaning, literal truth, and literate interpretation of the biblical texts. The Wheaton College professor of Theology proposes that "the authors speak the truth in all things they affirm (when they make affirmations), and will eventually be seen to have spoken truly (when right readers read rightly)." His essay is intelligent, wise, and nuanced at many levels and reflect a diligent attempt to make sense and bring unity to a very divided evangelical world regarding this topic. Chief to his approach is that before any debate on biblical inerrancy, let us brush up on biblical literacy. This is so applicable and should remind those of us that the bigger problem is literacy, not scholarly definitions of biblical inerrancy.

The last essay is by John Franke, who attempts to recast inerrancy in a supposedly newer light. As a result, he is always apprehensive about defining inerrancy or debating it until he has understood what it means to his opposing party. Conflicted as such, he proceeds to present his own understanding. He sees the CSBI as something of an archaic generation, saying that modern philosophical and theological circles have moved on. We are no longer living in that era. If Mohler's position is sharp and clear, Franke's position is cloudy. Biblical inerrancy is more contextual in the generation it was written for, and not to be transcended for use in our modern times in any "absolutist language." It is the Spirit that speaks and contextualizes the Bible for us, thus authorizing "multiple perspectives."

So What?
========
What truly brightens up this book is the many responses from the other contributors to each essay. Most of the contributors try to adopt a cordial appreciation of one another's inputs and various points of agreements. At various points, individual convictions get the better of them, in particular, Mohler and Enns. At one point, Mohler accuses Enns of having a "litany of intellectual crimes." Others like Bird injects wit in an otherwise tense debate. Enns himself tries to be charitable but only goes so far. Vanhoozer commands quite a lot of respect from the other contributors. These and many engaging views are there for the astute student of all thigns biblical inerrancy.

We all believe in the authority of the Bible but differ in the interpretations. We all affirm the authenticity of the Word of God, but differ in its literal extent. We all uphold the Bible's inerrancy, but falls under different meaning of what inerrancy means. In this well organized book, we read five variants of what biblical inerrancy means. Having seen how actively the contributors have interacted, I believe there are more variants of variants. At the same time, there is a chance that the contributors themselves would also evolve their positions after this project.

Contrary to popular belief, when we critique, we are actually offering opportunities for people to sharpen one another like the biblical way of iron sharpening iron. After all, it is extremely easy to express agreement and positive statements without offering much food for thought or engagement toward excellence. That is why I appreciate very much the vigorous responses by all five contributors to every main essay published in this book. I would venture to say that constructive criticisms and big compliments are both helpful and essential to the authors of these works. Kudos again to all who have contributed to make this book an enjoyable and educational journey.

About the Author
Dr. Larry Pace is a statistics author and educator, as well as a consultant. He lives in the upstate area of South Carolina in the town of Anderson. He is a professor of statistics, mathematics, psychology, management, and leadership. He has programmed in a variety of languages and scripting languages including R, Visual Basic, JavaScript, C##, PHP, APL, and in a long-ago world, Fortran IV. He writes books and tutorials on statistics, computers, and technology. He has also published many academic papers, and made dozens of presentations and lectures. He has consulted with Compaq Computers, AT&T, Xerox Corporation, the U.S. Navy, and International Paper. He has taught at Keiser University, Argosy University, Capella University, Ashford University, Anderson University (where he was the chair of the behavioral sciences department), Clemson University, Louisiana Tech University, LSU in Shreveport, the University of Tennessee, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Georgia.

Disappointing

I am not a beginner with R, but I am interested to see how people approach teaching R to beginners. It's not an easy system to approach, though it should be.

Some beginners seem to like this book, which depresses me a bit. The code tends to be clumsy, and all too often just plain wrong. (Clearly no reproducibility mechanism has been used as some examples are even syntactically incorrect.) A certain amount of clumsiness is probably a good idea if it leads the beginner to an understanding by a more accessible route, but most of the clumsiness here does not. An example is where the author uses an awkward loop to produce a copy of the vector x omitting the ith component, when all that is needed is x[-i], and I cannot believe this is difficult, even for beginners.

What disappoints me about this book is that all to often it makes life difficult for the user and heads off in, to put it mildly, unhelpful and confusing directions.

The book has a technical reviewer as part of the authorship team, but the role seem more of an adviser than of a reviewer. In places the 'reviewer's' advice is acknowledged, but not actually adopted. This I find very puzzling.

Great book for learning R

I like this book because it takes a practical hands-on approach to learning R by walking one through practical examples. I think the book is appropriately titled. It's not an exhaustive reference manual or cookbook nor does it teach one statistics. I have a lot of experience with SAS and it was easy for me to learn R from this book using SAS as my frame of reference. Neither R nor SAS are Excel. The former are statistical languages and they assume that you are already comfortable with statistical methods.

That said, it does have detailed examples on how to set up and run many of the popular statistical methods which I won't enumerate here because you can read them all in the table of contents. Each section of the book that discusses a particular statistical method begins with an overview the relevant equations supporting it. I like the examples of plotting results. I'll be using this book as a quick reference when I need it for statistical methods that I frequently use.

Ideal for the born-again statistician

I acquired an MA-level education that involved lots of study of econometrics (basically regression analysis using economic variables) 20-plus years ago. Unfortunately I hadn't used a lick of that knowledge until I was recently hired by a research org and felt the need to brush up on my stats and regression skills. This book, combined with a download of the R console, was my ticket to get back up and running with my new statistician peers. The author includes a lot of useful datasets, the most interesting to me being the student retention study which he indicates resulted in a very valuable real-life implementation at his institution. Yes, there are occasional disconnects between the R commands displayed and the output (some missing attach statements and load / read commands). That can be annoying but at least it makes you think when you enter those command and create output. If you're paying full freight for a hardcopy I can appreciate your concern over that (I read an online version), but if you would like to learn R and need to revisit the fundamentals like I did, this book is extremely useful.

About the Author

Partha S. Ghosh is currently Professor of South Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has been associated with New Delhi-based Indian Council of Social Science Research for the last two decades where he has held positions of Assistant Director (January 1978–April 1981, August 1983–December 1984)); Deputy Director ( January 1987–August 1990) and Director ( September 1990–August 1992; September 1993– December 1995). He has previously published seven books, and has contributed numerous articles to professional journals in India and abroad.

Excellent Reference!

WSINYE (White Space Is Not Your Enemy) is a great reference for those with no design background but who have to produce their own marketing vehicles such as brochures, websites, ads, etc. It is not intended for those with a marketing/design background, as is obvious by the byline of "A Beginner's Guide....". I think some criticism has been leveled at it by designers - but they aren't the ones for whom this book was intended.

What I found useful is that the authors give examples of how design is done wrong and then show how to put it into better order. They take the most common mistakes they see out there, the ones that people with no design background would naturally make, and show how to take the same elements and create a more effective and cohesive piece with greater appeal.

Another great chapter in the book provides layout examples for when time is a constraint. Those simple templates will give great results every time - they don't need to be groundbreaking, the just need to work and help communicate an idea effectively.

Important to good design, principles are given easy to digest segments. Readers don't want to have to take art school just to make an ad. So everything from space to focal point to balance are quickly covered with excellent examples.

Honestly, I was highly impressed with this and feel it would make a great reference when design skills are needed. It is easy to read but also meaty enough to be useful. Highly recommended.

White space within a design is a bit like a pause in a conversation - it need not be a bad thing, yet it is just one element in a larger being that is often overlooked or misunderstood.

This book takes a professional look at design, whether for traditional media such as brochures or for more modern media such as the web. The aim is for the beginner (or more experienced person who doesn't mind refreshing their knowledge) to learn about the concepts and practices necessary for producing effective visual communications. It only needed comic sans and a few smiley faces to add the metaphorical icing to the cake.

Fortunately the sheer wealth of detailed, considered and thought-provoking material on offer drew this reviewer in. This book carefully, or should that be cleverly, works on many levels meaning that the professional who (allegedly) knows it all need not feel talked down to and neither does the relative beginner need to feel that everything is swooshing over their head. It is unfortunate that the title of this book might restrict its possible audience as it is not really something that conveys just how thorough this book is!

From the start you get a great introduction to the principles and development of design before looking at many of the common errors that the author believes so many of us are guilty of. Be wary of stones in the vicinity of greenhouses? After that it is off to art school to briefly learn about elements, principles and theories of design before looking at matters weighty such as layout, type, colour and adding visual oomph. Even if you walk away with "only" a couple of good ideas or corrections to your present modus operandi then you will have got your money's worth. This is a book that is capable of so much giving if you let it.
