Not for the novice

"Passions of Innocence" is the perfect--if somewhat oxymoronic--title for this book. Unlike most books, this one demands personal experience of both love--erotic, filial, and friendly--and celibacy in order to gain the most benefit from it. For the record, celibacy means more than not having a spouse or partner in love. It is a way of life that takes the desire for sexual love and uses that desire to enter into a universally transcending way of life. Tantric celibacy is a unique type of celibacy, and its true meaning is completely different from its portrayal in pop do-it-yourself books. The sublimation and perfection of eros in the context of celibacy alone (without even adding the Tantric aspect) takes a lifetime of living to begin to comprehend. This book can help the individual on this kind of journey, but in my opinion, it will be mostly of academic interest to others. I may be in error, but I am speaking as a nun of 65 who has remained celibate her entire life, while trying to grow into the depths and heights of this kind of all-inclusive love. I have some personal experience in tantra, but not enough to judge the depth of the writer's accuracy. However, from my own limited knowledge, I believe he has done a credible job of presenting at least the essentials of tantric celibate eros.

About the Author
Cheryl Glenn is Liberal Arts Research Professor of English and Women’s Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. Before moving to Penn State, she taught at Oregon State University, where she earned a number of research and teaching awards and established the Center for Teaching Excellence. She also teaches at the Bread Loaf School of English, a summer graduate program for secondary teachers held in Vermont and New Mexico. Glenn’s scholarly work focuses on contexts and processes for the teaching of writing, histories of women’s rhetorics and writing practices, and inclusionary rhetorical practices and theories. Her many scholarly publications include Rhetoric Retold: Regendering the Tradition from Antiquity Through the Renaissance; Unspoken: A Rhetoric of Silence; Rhetorical Education in America; The St. Martin’s Guide to Teaching Writing; The Writer’s Harbrace Handbook; Making Sense: A Real-World Rhetorical Reader; and The Harbrace Guide for College Writers. She and J. Michael Hogan coedit Rhetoric and Democratic Deliberation, a Pennsylvania State University Press series. With Shirley Wilson Logan, she coedits the Southern Illinois University Press series, Studies in Rhetorics and Feminisms. Glenn’s rhetorical scholarship has earned her three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), book awards from Choice and from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women, a Best Article of the Year Award from College Composition and Communication, and an Outstanding Article Award from Rhetoric Review. She also has won four teaching awards. She has recently served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), and also serves in a variety of other leadership roles at Penn State and for the National Council of Teachers of English, the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, the Modern Language Association, the Rhetoric Society of America, and NEH. Melissa A. Goldthwaite teaches rhetorical theory, composition, and creative writing (poetry writing, creative nonfiction, food writing, and nature writing) at Saint Joseph’s University, where she is Associate Professor of English.  Her books include The St. Martin’s Guide to Teaching Writing (with Cheryl Glenn), Surveying the Literary Landscapes of Terry Tempest Williams (with Katherine Chandler), and The Norton Pocket Book of Writing by Students.  Her work has appeared in College English, Writing on the Edge, Reader, and in numerous books.  She is currently working on two books:  The Norton Reader, Thirteenth Edition, and Words Rising: The Making of a Literary Meal.

Good instruction

I consider this book to be one of the best how-to-write books I've read. I'm not a college student, but a writer who wants to sharpen skills, and I have found many sections of the book to be extremely helpful--the section on writing profiles, for example, and the one on writing autobiographical essays, just to name two. I've also found the information contained in other sections--such as Narrating, Illustrating, Comparing and Contrasting, Field Research--to be invaluable. I'm so glad I came across this book! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a detailed plan for learning to be an excellent writer.

I needed this book for my beginning composition class. Though this book is called the short ninth edition, it is exactly the same as the ninth edition, only it is a paperback.

Flexible and comprehensive!

I also teach "post-secondary English" but I have found the St. Martin's Guide to Writing to be a very useful resource because it gives students (and me) much support for the writing process, interesting readings for writing models and discussion, and, given the current high cost of college textbooks, its comprehensiveness means I don't have to require students to purchase more than one book! St. Martin's includes a writing handbook to review foundational writing skills. Chapters on taking tests and building a portfolio are also helpful, but what I like best about this book is its careful attention to supporting how we write with step-by-step explanations and examples. This care to detail is very useful for my students who are entirely online!

Comparing Snark to "Through the Looking Glass," Sowers say "Much of the poem shares words and ideas that first were used in the poem 'Jabberwocky' in 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.'" but with "'less exuberance and wordplay and more adult fear and anxiety throughout' Despite having the overall theme of a quest, as 'Jabberwocky,' did, in 'Snark' there is 'none of the triumphant joy of the earlier ballad, since the hunt ends this time in failure,' as eventually adults must acknowledge that all lives end in death. Carroll was reminded of this physical fact daily; despite his faith, he was facing the unknown of this final transition, and wrote it out metaphorically in this poem. The author tried to face this with his former exuberance, but knew he was dancing against the coming darkness."

Sowers has written her eNotations with several different audiences in mind: "A young reader might just read through the main text and look at the pictures, while a slightly older reader might read the definitions as well: so much of the Victorian life that was so familiar to Carroll, along with the language that described it, has changed or disappeared over the decades. A parent or grandparent could read this edition with a child, sharing some of the background information in the notes."

It wasn't what I expected, not sure what that was.....It was a poem, of course, but it had a deep meaning. The cast of characters all had their own take on what life was about and you can't help but examine what your own take on life is when you read it.

SO MUCH to fit into a small book, but here it is in simple form- Feel Love,Trust, Forgive and Change YOUR Llife!

When you are working and constantly learning in a field of study (psychologies), and concurrently struggling your way through issues within your personal life, love life, and your tribe, is it really possible to have the answers miraculously appear to you? Not Likely!
For for this lucky man, the "nugget for which I had been unknowingly searching" appeared finally before me after some bullying and cajoling by a persistent and good masseuse friend! Thank you Ally!
This was my experience with this book and Dr. Annette Cargioli's Emotional Polarity Technique. After training in, and studying Rieki 1 & 2, Hypnotic Regressions, Holographic Repatterning, Relationships, Chakras and Chakra Balancing, Chinese Meridians, various forms of body work, massage, reflexology, a myriad of healing modalities, and some other "difficult to navigate" methods for nearly 5 years, in one single seminar with Dr. Annette, I saw the clarity, ease of application, the relief which was immediate, and I became a believer.
Almost 14 years later I am still actively a believer for all the amazing changes I have seen in peoples life's in such an immediate way.
This is a technology that like Transactional Analysis, has the goal of 'curing" the clients, not just "understanding" them with endless conversations, like so many other "talking therapies!" (Yet I believe all therapies have value). For that reason, patient management is minimalized and referrals are increased, better yet, satisfaction is off the charts.
This book is written in an anecdotal and simple form for both the novice seeking help and understanding, and as a guide to assist working or aspiring new practitioners.
This is a truly amazing author and lady, whose purpose (as you can see) is NOT about simply making money, but sharing a wealth of information and healing technology to any who will open to listen and learn, and maybe even the birth of a meme!
I personally know of families that have broken through financial distress issues to success, children who went from average students to top few % of their classes after minor work, couples facing break-ups and divorces that remain today happily together and these successes are with less than 3 sessions and often less. I have seen chronic pain gone in a single session, and even diseases disappear with a balanced approach! Many things I never would have thought possible have materialized to reality.
The accuracy with which this technology allows a practitioner to find the "Original conditioning event" or "root of the issue" has the accuracy of William Tell's archery arrow!
Read, it, try it, and invite beneficial changes into your life by experiencing it, or become part of a soon-to-be worldwide movement to share benefits for betterment.
There IS something much bigger in understanding that a practitioner exhibiting unconditional love towards the best outcomes for you, has an exponentially greater effect than trying to tap yourself out of a dither (although at times that can also work). Love and forgiveness are very powerful ingredients to leave on the table with other methods (why would you exclude them?) when they are integral to the Emotional Polarity Process and experience. Be informed, then become experienced!
A quick and easy read, with reference materials that you can initially ignore, but which are there for you as your interests increase and are at your fingertips if you choose to take advantage of that simplicity.

I'm Annette's sister, Sherry. The information in this book is simple and complex. It is a useful tool to both lay beginners all the way through advanced psychology professionals. This is Annette's story of the development of her technique as well as the technique itself. The book is step by step why and how to move energy using your emotions. If you thought you were stuck in depression or angry over an unexpected life event, then think again. Learning and practicing Emotional Polarity Technique can give you a whole new perspective of what you used to believe. Your new perspective actually changes the way you feel. I have been using, learning and teaching it from my first experience of Annette working on me. That very first experience of healing left me feeling so much better, and relieving my physical, mental and emotional stress that I wanted more and more. From the beginning I was fully aware this saved my life and I wanted to learn this for my children and for my grandchildren. It has helped me cope, grow, and live a more vibrant life. Urban Elementalism

What starts as a grassroots urban renewal project, quickly turns into a paranormal mystery. I like urban elementalism, and anything that has to do with urban places generating mystical force. The author uses those contrivances in the story well, making the confluence of them dangerous, like I think they would be. But, she does it in such a way that the reader is able to draw their own conclusions, without getting preachy, or driving a particular agenda. Pleasantly surprised.

I loved this book! The imagery and the beauty that your mind creates while reading it. Also I loved the story progression, it kept you wondering what was happening next.
I wanted to be in the field with Olivia and all the characters there. You need to experience this for yourself. Such a magical experience
