This book is not one of those that keep telling you that you should do this & do that, it is very practical & straight to the point, it even gives you tasks to do in order to become an excellent networker. I have applied it myself while creating networks, and it worked efficiently...

A wicked satire which kept me intrigued and laughing

Karlof (or whoever the author is, this has to be a pseudonym) has clearly spent time in academia and interacting with Government agencies. He skewers academic egos, academic and government processes, and has great fun with names and acronyms and yet creates some interesting and strangely endearing characters. As absurd as virtually everything is in this book, I could not help pulling for the ill-formed team that was trying to do something unprecedented. The concepts that end up being pursued while equally absurd, are none the less thought provoking. I could not put this down, and I am sorry to see no other books by Karlof in print. I will wait impatiently for the next.

Sounds like the Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity

I agree with P F Smerdyakov's review and I agree with the reviewer who was upset that there was advertising by email "spam" suggesting we not purchase to teach a spam lesson. So just after I bought the book I deleted the spam email. Since I am a science type and an academic and know something about Harvard, I have enjoyed the humor. It reminds me of the condensed matter theorist at NYU who wrote "The Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity" as a poke in the eye of the Social Texts crowd. As I remember he invited them to jump out of his seventh story window near Washington Sq if they thought they could turn gravity off. Is he the author?

Sure, it's fun.

This is definitely a book that will be more appreciated by those familiar with the quirks of an academic environment and its race to win research funding. It made me laugh at loud on a few occasions and has some fun ideas. However, I could never get fully into the story - there wasn't ever quite enough narrative to fully draw me in. So, it's fun, not a waste of time to read, but also not a must-read.

About the Author
Thomas Beyer arrived in Canada in 1986 with less than $1,000 in his jeans to pursue his MBA at the University of Alberta. Building multiple businesses—including one with more than $100 million in assets today—was not just far from his mind, it had never even occurred to him then. Working his way through various software engineering and technology marketing careers he left IBM in 1997 to grow a software and consulting firm with a partner in California. He eventually arrived at real estate investing, in parallel to his software start-up career in earnest in 2000, after 10 years of saying, “Gee, I should really do something in real estate.” He started with a single rental pooled condo for $80,000, then grew the initial successes with his own money, and later investor & operating partners into an investment group with more than $100 million in assets with around 1,000 suites, and an associated property management company managing over 1,500 units. Good lessons

I enjoyed this. Author is a real real estate investor, unlike authors of so many get rich in real estate books, so he's got real life experiences to share. He shares some terrific observations, such as red vs blue vs green money, how cash flow is more or less a myth, how real estate illiquidity almost forces you to increase your net worth. Worth the time to read.

worst probability book ever

I'm sorry, beginner? This book is supposed to be a beginner??? First, it's written like a novel... not going anywhere, really. They say written examples, yeah, right. You NEVER see any problems worked out, and the questions, very very AMBIGUOUS! I got about 20 different answers from 20 different ways of interpretting each problem at the back of each section. The book isn't layed out well at all. The answers in the back of the book make no sense. It gives the reader virtually no understanding of how the author got the answers. Plus, and I mean PLUS... this book is full of errors, both gramatical and in the formulas... I'm sorry, if you're going to write a book, make sure you get the formula's correct. Every prob and stat class I have, he tells us of the errors in this book.

Oh, a big no no for this book is in some of the questions at the end of each section, they assume knowledge of the next sections. Come on. This book has very few examples. For the kinds of questions it asks, it's not good enough that it have one or two examples, then ask more complex questions.

This book is all wrong. Worst book I've ever owned, probably. The only thing good about it is its size. It's easy to fit anywhere, but that's no reason to buy a book. Did the author or publisher even proof-read, I wonder. No wonder this book never had a second edition.

A little misunderstood

I was forced to get this book for a class; otherwise, I wouldn't have bought something with bad reviews. The thing is, some of the previous reviewers don't like this book because it's "written like a novel." And I completely agree. It IS written like a novel. However, after some thinking, I have come to the conclusion that this is probably the best way to get the ideas across. Discrete probability would be EXTREMELY hard to understand without being wordy! This is not your regular algebra or analysis book.

I took off a star because there are many typos. I did find an errata sheet, but that was really hard to do. The author has passed away, and it's not a famous enough book to elicit reprinting, so that's definitely annoying. But give this book a chance. You might like the different approach to learning math in this book.

Not too great

This book could be used as a reference by someone already familiar with probability, however this book claims to be an introductory text, which it is not. The back of the book claim that there are "many worked exercises" is simply a lie. There are very few exercises worked out. There are plenty of exercises at the end of each section, but only the answers are given with no explanations. If your goal is to learn probability on your own you couldn't make a poorer choice than this text and if you're a student using it you better hope your professor is competent.

Intriguing!

Secrets in Phoenix was an intriguing, magical, page-flipping read. I was captivated from the start, and vividly swept into the pages, as its secrets were slowly revealed.
I traveled to Phoenix Holt, to Aunt Ness’ cabin nestled in the wood, with the Ballester children… and escaped into a world filled with suspense, mystery, romance, danger, and laughter.
The different personlaities and love shared by the siblings was endearing, and what can I say about Jaxon. I’d LOVE for him to be my mentor!
This is definitely a book I highly recommend for both teens and adults. I can’t wait for the next one. You don’t want to miss it!

ENCHANTING ' MYSTERIOUS ' IMPECCABLE WRITING

Secrets In Phoenix, perfect for those seeking a story full of mystery, magic and romance! I have fallen absolutely in love with this story! With the feel of Harry Potter and the epic romance of Twilight, I never wanted this story to end!

I was excited to learn that this book takes place in the UK, in a sleepy, mysterious little town called Phoenix Holt. Within the town of Phoenix Holt lies Averett Academy. Let's just say that there are some interesting things (and characters) going on within the walls of the academy. There are a few more surprises going on with Sophie's new school, but you'll have to discover them when you read the book!

Not only did I love the setting, I also loved the immensely descriptive details!

"The leaves on the trees were bronzed with the first traces of autumn, and some lay scattered over the ground like crisp red moats circling the broad tree trunks."

Speaking of characters, the protagonist, Sophie meets Jaxon, a fellow student who is assigned with the task of being her mentor. I just loved him! Not to mention their funny but flirty back-and-forth banter.

"My stomach gave a flutter. ''What's wrong with what?" I answered in an inferior squeak.
"The door,'' said Jaxon, smiling carefully.
"Nothings wrong with the door," I replied. I glanced at it. "I was just about to...um...go through it."
"You have to open it first,'' Jaxon said in a wry murmur. "Like this." He reached past me and clasped the brass handle."
I snuck a peek at him as he leaned around me. He wore an untucked shirt and a loosely knotted tie. His eyes smouldered grey and his sandy-coloured hair looked windswept. And he smelled incredible.
"See?'' he teased. "You open it, and then you can go through it. That's how doors work.''

Another thing I found enlightening was the British spelling. Before reading this I had no idea that English was spelled differently in the UK! I actually researched this and found out it's because in the 18th century there were no standards for English spelling.

All in all Secrets In Phoenix is a magical, gripping and fast read! If you're in a reading slump this book is a sure remedy! This is my first Gabrielle Lepore book and she's now one of my favorite authors!

Loved This Book!

I have never read anything by Gabriella Lepore. To be honest, I’d only known about her through YouTube videos and other author friends. It wasn’t until I was presented with the opportunity to read this book that I realized what I had been missing out on.

I am beyond happy that I got to experience this read, if only for the fact that it introduced me to an author that I am very interested in reading more from. But there was also an emotional element within this book that grabbed me from the very beginning. And I knew that I was in for something that was very special.

SECRETS IN PHOENIX shares the story of the Ballester siblings, Sophie and her twin brothers, Sam and Todd. They are moved from their childhood home after their grandfather passes, to the new and different town of Phoenix Holt, where they meet their Great Aunt Ness and a slew of other interesting characters. Phoenix Holt holds a history and secrets beyond the Ballester siblings wildest imaginations. And they just moved right to the center of it all.

As I’ve already mention, I had a great time with this book. I’m not someone who is taken with beautiful words. I’m not a prose enthusiast. And that’s not to say that Gabriella didn’t write this story beautifully. But what really grabs me is the character presentation. How deep the characters’ personalities run and how they interact with those around them. And I was completely enthralled with how these characters did all of the above. Sophie, though every bit of a teenage girl, was a smart one who kept me on my toes. Her brothers made me chuckle, but they also reminded me of normal brothers who messed around. I knew I would get great satisfaction from the relationships between these three from the very beginning.

Another thing that I was taken with immediately was the premise. That is why I even started reading the book. While I had NO idea what the story was about, my interest in reading about three uprooted siblings going to a strange new town? That interested me. It had a paranormal vibe all over it.

The thing to know about this book — you really will have NO idea what’s going on until Lepore reveals it to you. And the cool part about it, the reader finds out what’s going on when the characters find out what’s going on. Neither the reader or the siblings know more than the other. And that is not only difficult to do, but it’s difficult to do WELL. And Lepore nailed it. Sure, there are breadcrumbs that are dropped along the way, but not a single time can I say that I knew 100% what was going on throughout the story. The plot was a well kept secret, if I do say so.

The supporting cast of characters are another win for me. From Jaxon to Ness to many, many more — they all played a crucial role in, not only the progression of the plot, but also the personal development of our main characters. It was fantastic.

There was, of course, a bit of romance within the book. And I have to say that while I could have easily gotten turned off by who it was between, Lepore did a great job of selling it to me. It didn’t swing beyond my realm of believability. In fact, I was rooting for the two characters. It was done in the most tasteful of ways, without taking away from the story. The romantic element, in my opinion, only enhanced the plot as it progressed. It didn’t, for a single moment, take away from the real intention behind the story — which was about having three siblings learn about who they were and where they were living.

I could honestly go on and on about this story, but I think that it needs to be read in order for the full experience to be had.

Gabriella Lepore has gained a new supporter in me and I cannot wait to read more. My next question — is there more to come from this world?! I must know!

Finally-clear simple directions for successful modeling chocolate

As a home hobby baker it is simply too expensive for me to purchase commercial tubs of modeling chocolate. I've tried numerous recipes and had poor results. Using this book I successfully made my own Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate, and White Chocolate modeling chocolate clay. I keep it double wrapped in a container and take it out as needed to make roses, leaves, and cut outs for cookies, cakes, and petit fours. The properly made White modeling chocolate colors beautifully. This was the answer to better decorating. Most importantly you can do so many of the same things you do with fondant, except this tastes and smells perfectly delicious. Great book. I posted photos of my first roses & fantasy flowers here.

Great Book with Lots of Great info

I have been decorating with fondant for a while now and wanted to start incorporating modeling chocolate in addition to fondant. This book has so much great information - from recipes, tutorials, and great pictures.

If your looking into starting to decorate with modeling chocolate, this is the book for you.

Ultimate guide for working with modeling chocolate

Coniaris' book is excellent. In addition to the vivid photos that clearly guide readers through each technique and tutorial, her writing style is descriptive and as vivid as the photos. Each "how-to" really comes to life through the combination of words and photos. The detailed step-by-step instructions would make it easy for even a novice to re-create all the decorations.

I'm not a pastry chef, but have worked in many high-end bakeries for years and can attest that modeling chocolate is FAR superior to fondant. I can't imagine why any bakery or baker that aims to offer high-quality products would even touch the stuff (fondant). This book really is the ultimate guide to making the switch to modeling chocolate and mastering its use! Once you try it, you'll never go back to fondant.
