Review
"I believe the principles and techniques in this book can literally change the world, but more importantly, they can change the quality of your life with your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your co-workers and everyone else you interact with. I cannot recommend it highly enough." -- Jack Canfield, Chicken Soup for the Soul series

"Marshall Rosenberg is the mentor I wish we'd all had growing up. We learned to speak but not communicate and that has led to so much unnecessary personal and social misery. In this book you will find an amazingly effective language for saying what's on your mind and in your heart. Like so many essential and elegant systems, it's simple on the surface, challenging to use in the heat of the moment and powerful in its results. I use these tools every day and can totally vouch for them."(Vicki Robin - Co-author (with the late Joe Dominguez) - Your Money or Your Life) -- (Vicki Robin)

"Marshall Rosenberg's dynamic communication techniques transform potential conflicts into peaceful dialogues. You'll learn simple tools to diffuse arguments and create compassionate connections with your family, friends, and other acquaintances. I highly recommend this book." -- John Gray, Ph.D., Men are From Mars, Women are from Venus

"Nonviolent communication is the lost language of humankind, the language of a people who care about one another and long to live in harmony. Using stories, examples and sample dialogues, Marshall Rosenberg provides everyday solutions to perplexing communication problems. Readers will learn how to transform potential conflicts into peaceful dialogues; break patterns of thinking that lead to anger and depression; speak their mind without crating hostility; communicate compassionately using the healing power of empathy; hear whatever is said to them as a "please" or "thank you"; and make life more wonderful for themselves, their families, their colleagues, and all with whom they come into contact. In our present age of uncivil discourse and mean-spirited demagoguery, racial hatreds and ethnic intolerance, the principles and practices outlined in Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication are as timely as they are necessary to the peace resolution of conflicts, personal or public, domestic or international." -- Midwest Book Review - Taylor's Shelf

"We should all be grateful to Marshall Rosenberg. He provides us with the most effective tools to foster health and relationships" -- Deepak Chopra

From the Publisher
Marshall Rosenberg has rediscovered the lost language of humankind, the language of a people who care about one another and long to live in harmony. He guides us in reframing the way we express ourselves and listen to others by focusing our consciousness on four areas: what we are observing, feeling, and needing and what we are requesting to enrich our lives. The skills he teaches foster deep listening, respect, and empathy and engenders a mutual desire to give from the heart.

From the Author
Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, internationally known peacemaker, and founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication. The Center evolved from Dr. Rosenberg's quest to find a way to teach much-needed peacemaking skills across four continents and in war-torn countries.

As a child growing up in a turbulent Detroit neighborhood, Marshall Rosenberg knew he wanted to find a way of speaking that would stop the violence. As a psychologist in 1961, he set out to discover such a language and teach it.

Today, tens of thousands of people on five continents speak it. Dr. Rosenberg developed Nonviolent Communication training as a powerful tool for peacefully resolving differences at personal, professional, and political levels.

The title of the book says it all!
By Leela
Being able to communicative effectively is always desirable. This book breaks it down to 4 essential parts. Being able to respond rather than react to another person is always helpful! As is being able to connect through better understanding... of others and ourselves.
Wish this was mandatory reading for everyone on the planet!

Easy, fun and inspiring to read and use
By pdirt
I have read and studied a lot of psychological theories and models. Most of them are quite complex and take some time to learn a new vocabulary and understand the semantics of it. I started reading Rosenburg's book in the middle. It is the most readable book on self-awareness I have ever read. He makes his process of Nonviolent Communication very accessable right in this small book. His real-life example stories make it easy to connect to his teaching. He really knows how to communicate and it shows in this book. I plan to buy more copies and give away as gifts, not something I tend to do.
This book is a gold-mine for *any* relationship. Co-workers, friends, spouses, children, bosses, enemies, family...I believe what we all want so dearly in this day and age is real human contact and we are not getting it in many of our relationships. This book can help empower us to get the human contact we long for, and the other person will get what they want too.
I admire Mr. Rosenburg's wisdom and human contact so much that I plan to take one of his courses that explore the use of Nonviolent Communication more in-depth.
This book has the tools to really practice peace. We have so much knowledge and experience on how to wage war and violence. Yet peace is still such a mystery. I look at Ghandi in awe. Using the tools of this book, it is a bit easier to look at Ghandi and understand how he did what he did.

Mundane and academic - too thin
By Rob Hahn
A few good ideas stretched over way too many pages. No one will argue with the quality of the thought -- it's just that there isn't enough here to fill a book. Save your money.

I'm Down: A Memoir, by Mishna Wolff

Mishna Wolff grew up in a poor black neighborhood with her single father, a white man who truly believed he was black. "He strutted around with a short perm, a Cosby-esqe sweater, gold chains and a Kangol―telling jokes like Redd Fox, and giving advice like Jesse Jackson. You couldn't tell my father he was white. Believe me, I tried," writes Wolff. And so from early childhood on, her father began his crusade to make his white daughter down.

Unfortunately, Mishna didn't quite fit in with the neighborhood kids: she couldn't dance, she couldn't sing, she couldn't double Dutch and she was the worst player on her all-black basketball team. She was shy, uncool, and painfully white. And yet when she was suddenly sent to a rich white school, she found she was too "black" to fit in with her white classmates.

I'm Down is a hip, hysterical and at the same time beautiful memoir that will have you howling with laughter, recommending it to friends and questioning what it means to be black and white in America.

About the Author

Mishna Wolff was one of the 2009 Sundance Screenwriting Lab fellows. She is a humorist and former model, who grew up in Seattle. She lives and writes in New York City.

From Publishers Weekly
Humorist and former model Wolff details her childhood growing up in an all-black Seattle neighborhood with a white father who wanted to be black in this amusing memoir. Wolff never quite fit in with the neighborhood kids, despite her father's urgings that she make friends with the sisters on the block. Her father was raised in a similar neighborhood and—after a brief stint as a hippie in Vermont—returned to Seattle and settled into life as a self-proclaimed black man. Wolff and her younger, more outgoing sister, Anora, are taught to embrace all things black, just like their father and his string of black girlfriends. Just as Wolff finds her footing in the local elementary school (after having mastered the art of capping: think yo mama jokes), her mother, recently divorced from her father and living as a Buddhist, decides to enroll Wolff in the Individual Progress Program, a school for gifted children. Once again, Wolff finds herself the outcast among the wealthy white kids who own horses and take lavish vacations. While Wolff is adept at balancing humorous memories with more poignant moments of a daughter trying to earn her father's admiration, the result is more a series of vignettes than a cohesive memoir. Review

“This buoyant memoir is rich in detail but never feels over embellished…I'm Down certainly has serious thoughts on its mind (Wolff actually grew up quite poor and hungry), but the tone manages to be light and triumphant because of the hilarious child-goggles Wolff wears while spinning her tales. Rating: A” ―Entertainment Weekly

“An authentically funny, truly transcendent work that makes other, sorry-voiced memoirs by a certain more privileged class of writer pale--pun intended--by comparison…Wolff's focus, and the sweet soul of this terrific book, was on being accepted by her streetwise, wiseass dad, whom she knew loved her--and whom she loved--unequivocally.” ―Elle Magazine

“As she tells you at the outset of I’m Down, Mishna Wolff is all white―nothing remarkable, except that her way cool father, “Wolfy,” thinks he’s black (he’s not). What follows is a funny-melancholy coming of age memoir [in which] Mishna searches for identity in her broken home, her snobby, mostly white prep school, and―most restrictive of all―her longing heart.” ―O Magazine

“Deftly and hilariously delineates the American drama of race and class for one little girl.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Mishna Wolff was a white girl who grew up in a poor black neighborhood. This funny, engaging, and perceptive memoir tells the story of how she managed to negotiate these two very different worlds, and emerge with her sanity--and identity--intact.” ―Tom Perrotta, author of Little Children and The Abstinence Teacher

“And you thought you had a hard time fitting in when you were growing up? Try on Mishna Wolff's bizarre childhood for size…I'm Down explodes racial and cultural stereotypes with self-deprecating wit, wry humor and keen observation.” ―Janelle Brown, author of All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

“In a parallel universe - one, say, where Richard Pryor could be merged with Mark Twain and re- born with two x-chromosomes - the result would probably be Mishna Wolff. And her memoir, I have no doubt, would be as beautiful, funny, touching and irresistible as I'm Down. ” ―Jerry Stahl, author of Permanent Midnight and Pain Killers.

“Hilarious and sometimes tragic, Mishna Wolff's book is the expertly woven tale of a girl caught between two lives, two races, and two classes.” ―Christian Lander, author of Stuff White People Like

“A really, really funny book about the slings and arrows of growing up, of being a kid, of figuring out where you belong, of figuring IT out. The royal IT. Mishna's writing is fast, hip, edgy and so funny.” ―Michael Showalter, comedian and actor (The State and Wet Hot American Summer)

“Hilarious, bittersweet, and full of soul (in every sense of the word).” ―Wendy McClure, author of I'm Not The New Me

Best Memoir I've Read Since "Liar's Club"
By Beldini
What a great book! Fun, moving, and with a really unexpected ending. Though the promo material highlights her childhood as a white girl in a black neighborhood, this memoir is a more sophisticated story--and more universal story -- of a child who can't find her place in her family. And the most moving aspect of this book is her success in finding a place in the world, and what it ultimately costs her. Yes, it's heartbreaking in places, but it's hysterical in others and most importantly -- the story is compelling. I literally couldn't put this book down and I have the circles under my eyes to prove it.

This semi-autobiograpical memoir is really great airplane food!
By Zendicant Pangolin
Wow, apart from a bird identification book, this is the very first amazon vine product that I might have purchased in 'real life' and I'm happy to say that this is definitely a worthwhile acquisition.
Before we begin let's establish what this book is not: It is not hilarious or tragic as a cover blurb indicates. It is also not, strictly speaking, truly autobiographical as the author declaims up front something to the effect that many of the things in the book might never have happened and that she uses composites of characters to represent distinct personalities in her story.
What this book is is a very charming, often poignant, quite incisive, well-told story based on the remembrances of a caucasian woman whose childhood was spent living in a deteriorating Seattle neighborhood with a father who chose to 'go black.'
Interestingly, it is also a real testimonial to the quality and effectiveness of the the Seattle public school system and civic organizations in their efforts to provide opportunities to its most promising albeit less privileged (read wealthy) chidren.
The story revolves around a white girl who, along with her younger sister remain in the custody of her ne'er do well father who has fashioned himself a black man in a white man's body. They live in an urban Seattle neighborhood which has become predominantly black; a change that the girls' father revels in.
The author does a wonderful job of describing the struggles and triumphs she experiences as she struggles with the multiple challenges of adolescence; parental divorce; racial comity, difference and divide; and familial and peer group strife.
A really great thing about the book is that the author is able to give insightful analysis of the dynamics of the unfolding tale as if she was fully cognizant of them as a little girl. Of course the picture only became clear to her later, in adulthood, which is undoubtedly why she makes her disclaimer about the events depicted in the book.
Ms. Wolff knows how to spin a story and once you begin this book I doubt that you will want to put it down until you have finished it.
I began reading it on a flight from the West Coast to the East coast and found the book to be the perfect length for this journey as I got through the first third on the first leg and finished up the rest just as we were making the approach to land on the second leg: Brilliant!
You will definitely become emotionally invested in this book and I recommend it as a very satisfying entertainment that is better than mere candy or a popcorn movie.

A Hard Book to Rate
By Legend of a Cowgirl
This book is hard to rate because although I am African-American I had similar experiences as Mishna Wolff. The insult some of the reviewers feel is that the author is a white woman who experienced what many of us wish were "stereotypes"; however, in reality they do exist in the African-American community. I guess I can relate to the author's experiences because I was a child who not only had no athletic ability, liked to read encyclopedias, had no rhythm (a no-no), couldn't jump rope (that no rhythm curse) and hated fighting. I spent many days wanting to play with children my own age, but didn't want to be drawn into a fight or insulted. As a child, I did begin to befriend white children who did not like to fight and insult, but I received much flack about their friendships from my family. They actually preferred me to have friends who were black, even if they were mean.

I believe the author tried to soften the story with the impression that her experiences had more to do with economics. She wrote about her father's girlfriend, who was a nurse, who the author seems to feel was the most positive role model. She was much different than the other girlfriends and even the author's mother. She also tried to soften her impressions of African-Americans by giving examples of her white classmates who had very dysfunctional lives despite their luxurious lives.

The problems with the book are the following:
a. The author doesn't have any experiences (which she cared to divulge) with poor white people. Actually she doesn't have experiences with any white people besides her class and sports team mates, teachers, coaches, her parents and a brief mention of her uncle during a wedding. White people are mysteriously absent during her life,
b. The author ends the book abruptly during her junior high school years. We have no idea what her high school experience was and what happened during her hormone-induced teenage years,
c. We don't know how her sister faired. Her sister was comfortable with the neighborhood children and went to school within the community.

The oddest part of the book was not the community where she was raised but her parents. I don't care what a person's socio-economic status happens to be, parents still want the best for their children. Her father seemed intent on interfering with any attempt the author made to better her life. I also believe there was more to the dissolution of her parent's marriage since her father, who was obviously neglectful, to receive custody. There are some skeletons in the closet that the author doesn't seem to want to divulge or doesn't know.
Overall, I guess the author exposes the angst of being helpless in a dysfunctional family and not fitting, which is not that uncommon with children. Her excuse for her oddness was that she just was in the wrong neighborhood. It was hard to accept that a white woman was exposing a few of the bad aspects of growing up in the African-American community. However, I had to put my ego aside and be non-judgmental because she was only writing about her experiences and perceptions. I guess the objection to this book is that many blacks don't fit the stereotypes. Rather than be upset, we should be happy that we have transcended those behaviors and teach the positive behaviors to our children.

I can only give it three stars because the ending was abrupt and didn't describe her high school and college years.

In Xanadu, by William Dalrymple

One of the most successful, influential and acclaimed travel books of recent years from the author of 'Return of a King', which has been shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson prize. At the age of twenty-two, William Dalrymple left his college in Cambridge to travel to the ruins of Kublai Khan's stately pleasure dome in Xanadu. This is an account of a quest which took him and his companions across the width of Asia, along dusty, forgotten roads, through villages and cities full of unexpected hospitality and wildly improbable escapades, to Coleridge's Xanadu itself. At once funny and knowledgeable, In Xanadu is in the finest tradition of British travel writing. Told with an exhilarating blend of eloquence, wit, poetry and delight, it is already established as a classic of its kind.

Review
'Brilliant' Spectator 'Glorious' Patrick Leigh Fermor 'Dalrymple is probably the best travel writer of his generation' Daily Mail 'The future of travel writing lies in the hands of gifted authors like Dalrymple' Sara Wheeler, Independent

From the Publisher
'William Dalrymple has written a delightful book of travels ... a brilliant debut.' - PHILIP GLAZEBROOK, Spectator

'A splendid piece of British eccentricity with all manner of echoes: Freya Stark, Peter Fleming, Robert Byron ... Dalrymple is plainly either brilliant, or bonkers, or both.' - ALAN FRANKS, The Times

'In Xanadu is so uncommonly satisfying because of the rare skill with which William Dalrymple blends his ingredients: history, danger, humour, architecture, people, hardship, politics.' - DERVLA MURPHY, Literary Review

'Superb ... The vivid, engaging, and often hilarious account of an amazing 12,000-mile quest, His marvellous book - rich with the sights, smells, history and feel of Asia - will become a classic.' - Sunday Express

'This is travel writing in the grand tradition, with a true whiff of high adventure. Dalrymple recounts his saga with a fine mixture of humour and erudition, and with the exuberance of youth.' - Evening Standard

'Bright, sharp, laconic and outrageous, his is an adventurous account of hippies and mad mullahs, mosques and sacred tombs, dangers and celebrations, Dionysian rituals and rich discoveries. It is full of life and very funny.' - Sunday Times, Books of the Year

'Outstanding ... William Dalrymple is a natural writer. His models are, perhaps, Peter Fleming and Evelyn Waugh rather than more serious travellers, but he's a better scholar than either. Best of all, he has the gift of comedy ... In Xanadu marks the arrival of a new star.' - Sydney Morning Herald

'In Xanadu leavens adventure story and scholarly history with farcical dialogue and high-spirited buffoonery. It's a fast, furious, funny read ... clearly the stuff bestsellers are made of.' - SUNIL SETHI, Times of India

'Rarely does one review a book which so obviously marks the start of a splendid career. Brave and exultant, rich in esoteric knowledge and a sense of the ridiculous ... it is my guess that William Dalrymple will become one of the great English travel writers.' - Eastern Daily Press

About the Author
In Xanadu won the Yorkshire Post Best First Work Award and the Scottish Arts Council Spring Book Award, and was shortlisted for the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize. Dalrymple's second book, City of Djinns, won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award and the Sunday Times Young British Writer of the Year Award. Jerusalem to Xanadu on $1100
By ealovitt
William Dalrymple travelled 12,000 miles overland from Jerusalem to Xanadu in order to retrace the journey of Marco Polo, and I think the Venetian probably had the easier trip--- in 1271 Marco Polo didn't have to smuggle himself along the Silk Route by burrowing into the back of a coal truck.

The author calls his journey a `quest' rather than a `vacation,' since it involved not only a goal, but also a great deal of hardship and suffering. However "In Xanadu" is an excellent book to take on vacation. It is a lucid and sometimes hilarious account of a very low-budget journey through Asia ($1100 financed the entire trip through Israel, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, Iran, Pakistan, and the breadth of China.) And best of all, no matter how badly your own vacation turns out, you can always pick this book up and find Dalrymple in a more miserable spot than you are.

There is also beauty and moments of scholarly excitement when the author identifies some feature of the landscape with a passage from Marco Polo's journal. I particularly liked his description of a nocturnal train trip through Turkey. He sees dry flatlands transformed into lush pasturage and wonders at the source of water. Then the train comes upon a river, and Dalrymple unfolds his map:

"Its Turkish name, the Firat Nehri, meant nothing to me. Only when I followed the thin blue line down through Syria and out towards Baghdad, did I see the river's more familiar name --- the Euphrates....Is there another river which carries with it so many associations?...The river which ran through the Garden of Eden, one of the five rivers of the Apocalypse! Following its course on the map, its banks are littered with the names of the ancient cities it once gave life to: Mari, Nippur, Uruk, Larsa, Erdu, Kish."

The above paragraph is a rare flight of fancy for Dalrymple. His normal style is less flamboyant, laced with dry British humor where he tends to be the butt of his own jokes. Sometimes the reader is left to discover the humor of the situation through one of his dialogues. Here Dalrymple is in Kashgar, a Chinese city populated by the Muslim Uigurs. He is trying to explain through an interpreter, the lifestyle of the British `Chairman' Elizabeth II to an old mullah:

"Salindi [the interpreter] frowned. `He wants to know how many sheep, donkeys and camels your chairman owns.'

"'Tell him she owns no camels, but has very many horses and a great number of corgi dogs.'

"The information was passed on. The old man nodded his head as he listened.

"'Sir, this man is now asking about the dog which is called `khor-qi. He asks whether these `khor-qi' are good to eat.'

"'Tell the old man that they are delicious.'"

"In Xanadu" is travel writing in the grandly eccentric British tradition: a horrid climate and high adventure, laced throughout with dry wit. Be sure to get a copy for your next vacation. I'm going to loan mine to a friend who thinks she wants to visit Iran and Afghanistan (last year she trekked through Outer Mongolia). Either "In Xanadu" will dissuade her from her planned adventure, or else she is as bonkers as Dalrymple.

A Thousand and One Tales from the Silk Road
By Chris Ziesler
This is quite simply an enchanting book and for two interconnected reasons. The first and most striking reason is that Dalrymple manages to capture and convey the shear sense of wonder and excitement that comes from traveling across the world when young. So young, in fact, that I kept having to remind myself that he was only 22 when he wrote it.

If that were its only noteworthy aspect the book would be just one of many other worthy works of travel and exploration. What makes Dalrymple's book so compelling is his extensive grasp of the history and culture of the lands through which he traveled. I like to think that I have read a little of the literature relevant to the countries he passed through but time and again I was brought up short by some tale of a character, event or place of which I had never heard but that had caught Dalrymple's imagination and whose story he wished to share. He proved to be a teller of tales every bit as adept and entrancing as Scheherazade.

The premise of the book is that after graduating Dalrymple wanted to re-trace the footsteps of Marco Polo from Jerusalem across Asia Minor and deep into the heart of Asia in search of the legendary Xanadu. To do this he had to pass through Israel, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China, visiting some of the most important and memorable sites of antiquity on the way. He made his journey in the late 80s meaning that his journey, although maybe not as perilous or difficult, was a worthy successor to Marco Polo's epic voyage.

Since reading In Xanadu I have gone on to read several other books by Dalrymple and while his mature style is a little more settled and refined I look back on this first journey I shared with him with a special fondness for its marvelous exuberance and sense of the infinite possibility of youth.

Indispensable
By A Customer
If you only buy one book of Shelley's works -- make it this one.
This edition contains all Shelley's major poetry, as well as three essays (see table of contents on this page).
The bonus is that, as this is a critical edition, it also contains 15 brief critical essays, which are among the best explications you'll find of Shelley's work. (Since it's a critical edition, the poems are also heavily footnoted, something you'll either love or hate.)
The only downside is that a number of Shelley's shorter and lighter poems are absent (e.g., "Love's Philosophy"), and only a small portion of "Laon and Cyntha" appears here -- but overall the selection is solid. And, like all the Norton critical editions, this is printed on decent paper, eye-straining, tissue-thin stock found in some other volumes.
Perfect for those new to Shelley as well as long-time devotees.

Pure Intellectual Beauty
By A Customer
Shelley is the wild child of English poetry and his determined opposition to tyranny produced a huge variety of poetry, ranging from the rending lament of Keats in Adonais, to the defiant and taut sonnet Ozymandias. His single greatest work, however, is Prometheus Unbound, which a vast gothic ruin of neat poetry. One shot of it and you'll wonder why a) all the nice, obvious prosy bits seem to have been left out and b) why exactly you love it, and him, so much. Like a cross between a vision of God and a lobotomy.
It's strange, but he means it and the grand sweep of the poem and its rebirth of humanity (I did say this isn't kitchen sink drama) is as distinctive an experience as reading Milton for the first time or the first time you read a love letter in the bath. Holding an electric fire.
There are many other poems which should be headline news, such as Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, Mont Blanc, Mutability and Ode to the West Wind, but this edition also has the advantage of including the Defence of Poetry which is the most rhapsodic and emotive arguments you'll ever have the pleasure to be swept away by. For a second you want to believe the beautiful nonsense that 'poets are the unackowledged legislators of the world'. Shelley pulls no punches in prose because he hasn't pulled any in poetry. He believes in the prophetic importance of his role and is electric enough to almost make us belive him.
This is the best student edition of Shelley's works in print. Not according to me, but to a Professor in Romantic Poetry at Oxford University. Not a bad recommendation!
The essays in this volume are generally helpful and explain the structures of the poems where useful. They are also refreshingly short. Shelley is a poet who has run close to obscurity due to reams of bad criticism (by figures as famous as Matthew Arnold and FR Leavis) who have mistaken his extraordinary originality for weakness. An easy mistake, I'm sure. Shelley's poetry is all in the mind, and the lack of concreteness can be frustrating. A bit like flying can be so much more tiresome than walking.
