Absolutely Hilarious

Short version: Twilight fans will probably enjoy it; Twilight lolfans and haters will love to hate it. Either way, it's worth checking out.

Long Version:

Okay. This book is not, in actual fact, any good. At all. HOWEVER, it is a thing of beauty and a joy forever because it is incredibly funny in its ridiculousness. As soon as I heard about it I was instantly sold and have been waiting anxiously for months to get my hands on a copy.

Here's what you need to know: The book apparently takes place in an alternate universe in which the Cthulhu Mythos, rather than being a set of stories written by H.P. Lovecraft, was a real ancient mythology. This mythos is studied academically in modern times, but isn't really part of popular knowledge or culture. Our main character Andromeda (yes, really) has a strange dream about a beautiful boy and a terrifying sea creature. She shrugs it off, but a few days later the boy from her dream shows up at her high school. Riley, stilted of speech and inhumanly beautiful of countenance, seems simultaneously angered and fascinated by poor 'boring' Andi. What could it mean???

Right now you might be thinking, wow, that sure sounds like Twilight-but-with-Cthulhu. And you would be absolutely correct.

If you've ever read a detailed critique of Twilight or its many knock-offs (Awoken seems to take quite a bit of inspiration from Hush Hush as well), you already know what there is to dislike about this book. The love story is contrived and borderline abusive. The main character has little personality beyond 'whiny'. The antagonists are boring and one-dimensional. Etc, etc.

And yet...this is, in a way, the ultimate fantasy of its kind. Vampires and werewolves are ultimately strong humans; angels and fairies and whatnot are more than regular people, but generally written to be very human as well. In Awoken, a lot of time is spent pointing out just how inhuman and ~above humanity~ Riley is. He (spoilers?) literally has the power to initiate the end of the world. And yet he will prevent that destruction, because of his deep and abiding love for ordinary Andi. The all-out embracing of the tropes is, as I noted above, deeply hilarious.

Also, shout-out to Riley's 'Uncle Neil' (Nyarlathotep), a minor character in the story who basically steals the whole damn book right around the time that he calls Riley 'Jolly Green Giant'. If Serra Elinsen writes a ten-book series about the adventures of Uncle Neil and his curio/cultist supply shop 'Crawling Chaos', I will buy and read every one.

In the tradition of The Fisherman's Wife and Calamari Wrestler, this novel explores what it's truly like for a woman to love a cephalopod. But unlike these earlier works, it plumbs the depths of the madness of Cthulu, while never leaving behind the joys and lightheartedness of first love.

Miss Elinsen's novel Awoken is the most heartfelt book I've ever read this year. I can feel the love and heart that was poured into this book, the love between Riley and Andi is so good gives me tears. And I just LOVE Uncle Neil, he is so awesome it makes me wish I could have an uncle like him! This book became quickly one of my favorites, along with Phantom of the Opera and I cannot wait for more from Miss Serra Elinsen, if you can I would say read this book as soon as you can!!

Grade 4-8-These slim paperbacks are made to look like actual Hogwarts tomes, complete with creased covers and plenty of marginalia scribbled by Harry and other students. Fabulous Beasts, a facsimile of Harry Potter's very own textbook, contains descriptions of 75 magical beasts, written in a wonderfully dry yet droll style by a renowned magizoologist. Quidditch is the facsimile of a Hogwarts library book, which had to be literally pried from the hands of librarian Madam Pince. It gives a comprehensive history of the game and its rules, as well as a rundown of each of the 13 league teams of Britain and Ireland. Harry Potter fans who pride themselves on knowing every minute bit of Hogwarts trivia will devour both books. From Professor Dumbledore's introductions to the price listed on the back cover (14 Sickles 3 Knuts), readers will find a wealth of detailed magical lore and laugh-out-loud humor. Neither book is as gripping as the actual series, of course, but fans who are waiting for the fifth installment will be entertained by these volumes in the meantime.

Gr. 4-7. Because this is a "Harry Potterless" year, kids in need of a fix may find it in these two volumes. The conceit is that these are Harry's schoolbooks (Fantastic Beasts, by Newt Scamander; Quidditch, by Kennilworthy Whisp), with margin notes by Harry and pal Ron Weasley. The concept breaks down in the introductions: Professor Dumbledore explains that the books are being offered to muggles (because the proceeds of the books are going to British charity Comic Relief, a disclosure that will raise the eyebrows of any reader who undestands the importance of secrecy in the wizard world. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has gone into making these seem like real textbooks. The jackets look torn and faded, the print is (annoyingly) small, and the information is well detailed. Illustrations are in short supply, and not every fan will want to know this much about Quidditch and imaginary beasts, especially when the text is so hard to read. Buy several copies (the money really does go to charity), but expect a few disappointed readers. REVWR

***READ BEFORE BUYING***

Being the complete potterhead that I am, I loved this book. I reccommend it for anyone who is interested in reading an informative encyclopedia-like book that you can find in the home of many wizarding folk. This book is supposed to be in similar format to a dictionary. DO NOT BUY IT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A STORY. This book is used in the wizarding world as a guide on topics such as where to find a Hippogriff or what a knarl really is. Page wise, it is on the small side and lacks pictures, but if you love it as much as I do, it doesn't really matter. Multible people gave this only one star (undeservingly so in my opinion). Many of these people did so purely because they didn't research the product (by using the internet or READING THE HP BOOKS) before buying and were looking for a fairly tale or story similar to the new upcoming movie based on the book, not an encyclopedia. Do not let these bad reviews stop you from buying this book. I do suggest actually going to a book store rather than buying it from amazon though. That way, you will be able to skim through the pages and see if this is your kind of book. In addition, I read a few unsettling reviews about how in the name of God there is going to be a movie made based on the book. In case you are interested the movie is going to be about the author, Magizoologist Newt Scamander. Hope my review was helpful.

An Excellent Companion to the Harry Potter Books

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" truly is an excellent companion to the Harry Potter books.
Written in J.K. Rowling's consistantly humorous style, the book is interesting, and to prevent the information from becoming boring, there are lots of funny remarks and comments supposedly "written" by Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, two of the Harry Potter books' main characters.
It is also fascinating - if you observe the book carefully, you will see how much effort has been put into it to make it look like it really DID come right out from Harry's world.
This book is a must for Harry Potter fans everywhere, but should only be read after completing the main books, as otherwise it will not be as easy to understand. Also, from purchasing this book, you will have the pleasure of knowing that you have helped a great cause, no matter where you might be.

Makes the Wizarding World Even More Realistic To Us Muggles

I hate to give away some of the books more interesting points, but I LOVE the way this book is written to explain away muggle sightings of magical beasts such as the Loch Ness Monster, and other creatures featured in muggle "fairy stories" such as fairies, unicorns, trolls, etc. It also explains how such creatures can really exist without our knowledge. The Foreward by Dumbledore that mentions the "Thiefs Curse" on anyone reading the book who did not purchase it is also cute. The notes by Harry, Ron, and Hermoine are amusing as well.
Another benefit for any reader of Harry Potter books is that it gives one a greater understanding of why creatures like the centaurs in the first book and the mermaids in the fourth book mostly want little to do with humans. Of course this portrayal of the centaurs behavior is only in the book and not the movie, and therefore wouldn't be at all intriguing to someone who has only seen the movie, but only to a true addict like myself. I can't wait till the 5th book is released - I WANT MORE!

Bannermans Catalogue

Highly recommended if you want to see what the American Military was 'getting rid of' back in the day. Bannerman's was the true first surplus dealer in America and this catalog is one of the best. DON'T buy it expecting some sort of order to things, generally, but get it for the general information in it and the sheer joy of reading. Well worth it when you find it.

This book, a reprint of the Bannerman and Sons' company catalog, is a fascinating look at what this company had to offer. It includes everything from uniforms to weapons, and not just surplus items but also test items bought by the U.S. government for testing and odd lots of foreign weapons of very old vintage acquired one way or another. The engraved illustrations are excellent and the articles which were included as part of the catalog are interesting as well. If you are not familiar with bannerman and are interested in militaria I recommend at least acquiring a copy of this book to review it.
