Best Convective Heat Transfer Book

I have been teaching a convection class for 25 years and found that the available books really stink, except this one. Burmeister presents thing the way I like to think about them, and the way I like my students to think about them.

I'll hope thee will be a new edition, but given the restrictions of presenting what can be presented in a semester, this is still the best book around.

Need self-improvement? Here's the real deal!

As a professional helper myself I am rarely, if ever, impressed with self-help books. Changepower is the exception. As a counselor herself with a wealth of experience, Meg Selig provides techniques that are used by professional helpers. I like the upbeat tone of the book. The strategies are easy to follow. I have recommended this book to my students as well as clients. Most of today's "get real" self-improvement books are to embarrassing to recommend. This book will cost you a lot less than seeing a therapist and could provide you with all the help you need. And yes it is written by the same Meg Selig that writes the spirited blogs for Psychology Today.

Change in progress

I don't read many self-help books,but I thought, "Okay, I'll use it to bump up my motivation to lose the five pounds I gained over Christmas. By the time I finished I was revved up to tackle the massive clutter in my basement! (I've already dropped the weight, and the basement is coming along.) Selig has a very readable style and a step-by-step approach, backed up with the psychological research and enriched with fascinating stories of success (and failure) from her students. She guides you to reflect on your own sources of motivation and provides a great, practical "toolbox." The book is a good companion to revisit when the "change" energy flags.

Based on the latest science of habit change

I love this book. Most books on this subject are pure hype, telling you to go eat nothing but grapefruit or "just quit" smoking (which is fine for a few, but....)
Meg Selig knows all the research about exactly how to set up the stages of change for yourself--the stages that successful "changers" have done with whatever habit they are breaking. She makes it simple. If you understand those stages, you know what you're going through, you won't backslide as easily, and you can understand the occasional lapse and still keep going toward your goal. Also, the author is a cheerleader all the way; the book is very optimistic.

Required reading for Global Financial Sector and risk professionals

If Nassim Taleb had written this it would be required reading!

This book illustrates the limitations of the conventional approach to rating risk, particularly financial and insurance risk.

If current risk rating is based upon the "probability of possibilities" from historic data that, predominantly relates to an era of linear systems it is ill-equipped to address dynamic (non-linear) systems...and these are exactly what we have to deal with in an inter-connected world! Randomness is not merely about risk but uncertainty.

Risk Management as we know it needs to embrace complexity as a major business threat that can, now, be measured to ensure structural stability and managed to avoid collapse. Unmeasured in remains in the realms of uncertainty!

In an era of systemic risk - that travels at breakneck speed destroying structure - fragile organisations and their ecosystems can act as an "accelerant" - robust systems can act as "fire-breaks".

Financial Institutions who carry business risks NEED to, at least, supplement their current rating bases to ensure capital adequacy and to continue to offer relevant solutions for now and in the future.

As someone who has no formal scientific training I found it surprisingly easy to follow despite flirtations with Thermodynamics, Complexity, Systems, Information Theories and Zadeh's Principle of Incompatibility.

The financial crisis has showed the limits and the constraints of the current models used to measure the level of reliability and sustainability of a product or a company or a country. The PoD, in a turbulent environment, where the level of uncertainty has reached unexpected levels, becomes unreliable because the speed of the change of the environment is so fast that when a rating has been issued the rating isn't already aligned to context in which the company runs its business.

The novel theory, illustrated in the book, gives an answer to why the current techniques have failed and in meantime provides a new measure of the risks based on the complexity. Complexity, although it has a relevant role in business strategies and in company governance, doesn't have the same value as other business metrics do. Complexity is a key feature and "Meta KPI" of the level of sustainability of any business model.

As it's well explained in the book, the excessive complexity reflects chaos-dominated systems, in which the structure of the business model is weak. Rapid variations of complexity, independently of whether it is rise or fall, generally point to unstable and unhealthy systems.

The examples in the book, clearly, explain the impacts and the consequences of complexity on business and in meantime give sound indications on how the company can deal with unforeseeable and unexpected events which have characterized the recent years. This fragility, as the book highlights, if not managed, can have serious consequences which, in some cases, can be catastrophic.

Therefore, in order to compete in a turbulent and uncertain environment the conditio sine qua non is that complexity must be part of the critical success factors and business metrics already used by the management of the company.

If Only She Could Know Her Positive Influence

I Only wish I could get in Touch with this wonderful woman who has been an indellible inspiration to me ever since 1984 when I first saw the movie about her accident.. and more importantly.. about her recovery. And now, 19 years later, to finally have a copy of the book that fills in the gaps. How can I be so lucky?
Leola Mae is a true Survivor, and through her experiences replayed on the screen and on paper, I, too, have become a Survivor against so many odds that people have shaken their heads in amazement when they see and hear me. I could've given up, but Leola had already become such an inspiration to me, it was no longer an option I'd even consider. Just 3 months ago, her influence came into play again for me as I began the recovery process after a 13-foot fall to a slate floor. Both arms broken, a head injury, bruises and torn muscles.. and a boss who couldn't understand why I wouldn't be back to work that week. It's a long process to go through, learning how to write again, triumphs over lifting a wet washcloth, a can of tuna, a bowl of soup.
I have a wonderful, supportive husband, and even though I'm still not fully recovered, I already feel like the Velveteen Rabbit! (read the book and you'll know what I mean)
This book is written in such a beautiful, personal way. I can picture the intersection where the accident happened, I can see her try to lift her head from the snow. I'm right there with her when she discovers everyday tasks are too much to try so soon. What she describes is the way it really happens, folks. I'm here to testify to that.
If only I'd known her accident had happened in Alaska,(I used to live in Anchorage) I would have erected a sign in honor of her at that very spot along Tudor Road that I, too, had traveled many times. I would have sought permission to post a commemorative memo on the bulletin board at the Elmendorf AFB Hospital where I spent so many hours, if only I had known I was walking the very halls where she had worked.
Leola Mae, if you're out there, please know your story has influenced - and saved - many lives out there. I am forever grateful to you for your courage.

Leola and James Stallings divorced in 1972 after relocating to Des Moines, Iowa. Leola resumed nursing at Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, where she was a clinical instructor. She met Harold Swihart in 1981 and they were married in 1982. In 1998 they moved to Punta Gorda, Florida, where she contracted a virus in the spring of 1999 and died on May 19th of multiple organ failure.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Leo's and her imprint will forever be with me.

Why Me?

The pain Leola wrote in her book of her own medical experience more then likely does not come even come close to what she experienced in real life. Leola is a true survivor in every sense of the word. While this is a wonderful book for anyone to read, I would particularly highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to get through just about any of life's trials (medical or otherwise) which have a tendancy to to make one feel there is no hope. There is hope. Leola will convince you of that. In every sense of the word, Leola is a beautiful person - inside and out and I wish her everything she could possibly hope for.

This book is not one of those that keep telling you that you should do this & do that, it is very practical & straight to the point, it even gives you tasks to do in order to become an excellent networker. I have applied it myself while creating networks, and it worked efficiently...

A wicked satire which kept me intrigued and laughing

Karlof (or whoever the author is, this has to be a pseudonym) has clearly spent time in academia and interacting with Government agencies. He skewers academic egos, academic and government processes, and has great fun with names and acronyms and yet creates some interesting and strangely endearing characters. As absurd as virtually everything is in this book, I could not help pulling for the ill-formed team that was trying to do something unprecedented. The concepts that end up being pursued while equally absurd, are none the less thought provoking. I could not put this down, and I am sorry to see no other books by Karlof in print. I will wait impatiently for the next.

Sounds like the Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity

I agree with P F Smerdyakov's review and I agree with the reviewer who was upset that there was advertising by email "spam" suggesting we not purchase to teach a spam lesson. So just after I bought the book I deleted the spam email. Since I am a science type and an academic and know something about Harvard, I have enjoyed the humor. It reminds me of the condensed matter theorist at NYU who wrote "The Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity" as a poke in the eye of the Social Texts crowd. As I remember he invited them to jump out of his seventh story window near Washington Sq if they thought they could turn gravity off. Is he the author?

Sure, it's fun.

This is definitely a book that will be more appreciated by those familiar with the quirks of an academic environment and its race to win research funding. It made me laugh at loud on a few occasions and has some fun ideas. However, I could never get fully into the story - there wasn't ever quite enough narrative to fully draw me in. So, it's fun, not a waste of time to read, but also not a must-read.
