I have just finished re-reading the book, “God, Adam, and You,” by Michael M. Christensen. I can say that it is one of the most comprehensive, carefully thought out studies that I have ever seen. He studies the whole concept of what is called “original sin,” and how that has affected the Christian church, both corporately and as individual Christians. I am going to quote a few things he says in the Epilogue at the end of the book.
1. The first point is to not be afraid to think, question, challenge, and seek when pursuing biblical truth.
2. A second point is that God is not the author of sin. It seems that there are two extreme errors that we should avoid regarding sin.
a. On the one hand, the world chooses to be oblivious to the details of sin.
b. The other extreme is for believers to think that everything they do is tainted with sin…The backside of this second point is how we were created.
3. A third point is to focus on what God says about us as Christians…Peter tells us that God has given us all the divine power to live godly…Relatedly, we should not be afraid to see ourselves as holy if we are obeying all the spiritual light we have.
The author has exegeted many passages which are often misunderstood in such a way that it would be hard to oppose his conclusions. He has also taken into account the many opinions extant in the church today. I heartily recommend this book to all, with the warning that it is not light reading.
It needs to become Kindle available, and it needs to be translated into Spanish as soon as possible. Hopefully it will be translated into many languages, but I mention Spanish because that is where I have been teaching in the past years.
