The life-long influence(S) of reading '33 Years of Espionage'/I ve been looking for this book for, ALMOST, 40 years.

I am 61 years old. The last time I saw this book, I WAS a teenager. This book represents the "REAL" stories of espionage (i.e. the stories of the REAL stories of Mata Hari [she was a scape-goat and an excuse for the WWI French losing so many battles], (Prussian) Fraulein Doktor, etc., etc..). It also encouraged me to study foreign languages. I am presently "conversant" in Chinese, Japanese, Russian, with a "splattering" of French, German and Spanish; Tagalog was taught to me by my former girlfriend in the Philippines; in short I developed a HUGE talent, skill, ...whatever for foreign languages because of this book. ALSO, my being an Asian Studies major in college, ...AND my experiences in the U.S. Navy, home-ported out-of Yokosuka, Japan, and traveling extensively throughout east Asia, for approximately four [4] years, all started with this book; it IS my bible, ..hence FINALLY (!!!) getting it is more personal than I can say here.

About the Author
is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Director of Clinical Services and Director of the Center for Brief Therapy at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She received her PsyD in clinical psychology from Loyola College in Baltimore and completed an APA approved internship at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a post-doctoral fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She is board certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. As a licensed psychologist, her clinical and scholarly work includes nonpharmacological pain management, somatization disorder and psychology in primary care. She is a member of several professional organizations and has published and presented on various clinical health psychology topics.

Superb resource

This volume can best be described as comprehensive, wide-ranging, valuable, and useful. It is useful inasmuch as the material described is rather easily adapted to patient work. The idea of this handbook examining a cognitive behavioral persepctive on this range of medical problems is reflective of the zeitgeist of the field. It is timely, up-to-date with entries authored by some of the foremost professionals in the field. The editing team, two psychologists (DiTomasso and Golden), and a family physician (Morris) made sure that the material covered would meet the needs of the psychologist, counselor and social worker needing insight into medical problems and the medical professional (physician, nurse, and physician assistant) being offered the behavioral side of the equation. The professional looking through the table of contents will find something for everybody. This is clearly a book for the shelf of every behavioral health professional.

A better approach to managing innovation projects

For anyone involved in new product development and project management, this book is a must. Chapters 10 and 11 have the best approach that I've read recently on managing innovation projects. In Chapter 10, Discovery driven planning, and its approach of identifying and managing the assumptions behind an innovation project is very powerful. This is much more powerful than the traditional construction based approach to project management. In Chapter 11, the authors present a better approach to evaluating project progress based upon surveys. This is much more powerful than the traditional project management approach of earned value, which frankly does not work here and generates a ton of non-value added effort. If you are a project manager and you work in innovation/new product development, I highly recommend that you buy this book. Then determine how to use it in your organization.

This is a great book on strategy and innovation... of products, services, and your entire company.
There are many actionable checklists, as well as excellent case studies and comments. Lots of footnotes and a well-developed bibliography.
Minutes after you buy this book you could use their checklists to improve your product and service offerings.

Good check lists!

You like to learn the entrepreneurial mindsets from this book. The authors teach this course, at the Executive MBA program, of Columbia Univeristy (only $15,000 for five days). Of course your company pays for it. If not, reading this book is a good alternative ($20 is not bad). The problem with the book, is generality. It does not provide examples of any individual or firm that has been successful with the use of the entrepreneurial mindset. It is like teaching you all the theory to be successful, but no examples on how these theories can be put into action. I stronly disagree with most of the reviewers here that this is a useful book to start a business. It is not. However if you wish to learn the theory, this is the book for you. I would like to find out if the authors themselves, started any business of their own by using these theories.

Very disappointing. Sorry.

I am the kind of guy who buys and loves most every book that is recommended to me by one of my mentors. As I am in the process of trying to learn and grow and apply the tools of the new social media and latest technology, when I read the recommendation I snapped this book up with great expectations. I Sat for hours in hopes of really getting the usable tools that the book seemed to promise. The recommendation, the landing page and the reviews on Amazon all had me keyed up for great. The book unfortunately delivered nothing of substance. It was a mish mash of generic, over used popular business pablum. And never delivered on the promise of usable, nuts and bolts information.

I wanted to love it. But after devouring it, sat the book down and felt like I had been duped by a great marketing campaign. I honestly feel bad about writing a bad review like this, but I feel worse about letting unsuspecting would-be buyers waste their time and money.

Not sure how all of these rave reviews ended up here on Amazon, but my guess its the product of good friends, or readers who have are unsophisticated and easily pleased.

Same Info as in Peggy McCall's Radio Interviews

After hearing Peggy McCall on several radio shows, I admired her enthusiasm for marketing on the net. However, there was barely anything in the book that was not mentioned in her radio interviews. I was very disappointed, and felt I was duped out of the cost of the book. The thing is, she is such a good promoter that she got me to buy the book which I rarely do when I hear someone interviewed on the radio about their new book.

Very Little Information on How to Create a Viral Explosion

Peggy McColl's "Viral Explosions" provides a very general overview on how to create a brand and launch information products on the internet. The 2 main "secrets" for creating a viral explosion that are revealed in this book are that you should use affiliates and time all your marketing activities so they hit at/near the same time for maximum impact. If your reaction to this is "duh", then this book will probably be too basic and not worth the purchase price for you.

On the positive side, this book is short, easy to read, and low cost, so it's not a complete waste of money. I gave it 3 stars because I believe the 5 star reviews for this book were posted by friends of the author. There is nothing wonderfully revealing or particularly actionable in this book except for 2 sample emails that can be used for recruiting affiliates. It's definitely NOT a 5 star book. Anyone looking for step-by-step instructions or guidance will have to buy one of the author's high priced info products.

The third but hopefully not the last!

“The Pope’s Assassin” is the third volume of Tim Severin’s “Saxon” series. These tell the story of Sigwulf, the exiled son of a Saxon chief from England who was exiled and sent to the court of the Frankish King Carolus (Charlemagne). Over the years, he has become a member of his military retinue (one of his “miles”) but also a valuable and learned member of his household who is occasionally used on “special” missions, whether diplomatic or inquisitive, which require more than just muscle.

The first volume of this series focused on King Carolus’ expedition to Spain, including the famous disaster at Roncevaux and the death of the no less famous Rollo. The second book was about the no less historical embassies exchanged between King Carolus to the Caliph Harun-Al-Rashid.

This one, which takes place a few years later in King Carolus’ reign, covers the years AD 799 and AD 800. The focus here is on two historical events which the author has linked together: a vicious attack on the streets of Rome against Pope Leo and the crowing of Carolus as Emperor in Rome a bit less than two years later.

While perhaps not quite perfect – there are a few glitches which I will come back to and which make some parts of the story a bit hard to believe – the book is nevertheless excellent in many respects.

The web of lies and plots is griping and has multiple levels, involving noble factions in Rome and Italy but also wider rivalries pitting the Frankish Kingdom and the Byzantine Empire. The later, despite its declining influence, fights hard through its cunning diplomacy to try to keep the “upstart” Frankish king from usurping the imperial crown. It also plays a key role on the steppes North of the actual Danube in pitting nomadic confederations, tribes and warlords against each other in a ruthless and pragmatic “divide and rule” tactic that has been practised by the Eastern Roman Empire for centuries and would continue to be used for still more centuries.

The second strongpoint is the description of the papacy and Roman church at the end of the eighth century. It was essentially a prize which Roman (and some Lombard) aristocratic families fought for, attempting to nominate their own candidates in order to control and plunder the riches that derived from it. The author has particularly well shown some of the power games, thefts, embezzlements and corruption that were at play through the diversion of the “Avar Treasure”, part of which was donated by Carolus to the Pope. He also mentions the so-called “Donation of Constantin”, the most well-known ecclesiastic forgery of the time which would be used and re-used by Popes to justify their alleged supremacy over temporal rulers across Europe

A third set of great features are the descriptions of early medieval, shrunken and half derelict Rome, which its abandoned quarters, its districts turned into slums, its temples turned into churches and its rundown old Roman palaces. The squalidness of some descriptions, allied with an expedition to hunt down a member of a Roman gang on his own turf to extract information from him, are quite stunning.

The fourth set of interesting features are the characters themselves, and that of Sigwulf in particular. The main characteristic is that they are believable. Sigwulf is no super-hero or great warrior, misses quite a few things, gets bashed about and used as an instrument without always being aware of what exactly is at stake. Some of other characters, such as that of Paul, the now retired high ranking papal official who still wields a lot of influence, has kept all his contacts and is the consummate insider and clerical politician, are also very good. A further interesting character was that of the Frankish Archbishop whose physical appearance belies his cunning and who had become one of Carolus’ lead official and Sigwulf’s “boss”. One last character is the Byzantine Emperor’s ambassador to the Avar Khagan, one Nicephoros, whose nickname among the Avars – the Poison Dwarf – tells it all.

Finally, the section dealing with the Avars is also fascinating, even if the author may have perhaps slightly “overdone” the “barbaric” aspects of the Khagan’s Court. These were a military aristocracy that dominated a composite federation of numerous people beyond the Danube, including Germanic (such as the Gepids), Slavic and Turkic (Oîgurs and Onogurs in particular), as shown in the book. The assault and destruction of the Khagan’s Ring was indeed a major blow to his prestige and lead to upheavals, rebellions among their subjects and infighting between the various Avar clans which would bring their demise, as largely shown in the book.

There are, however, a few little glitches which prevent this exciting, well-thought out and well-researched story from being perfect. I will mention just two.

One is that I cannot help finding it a bit unrealistic to have Sigwulf riding back and forth from Carolus’ palace at Paderborn to Rome (a couple of thousand miles) on his own without anything unpleasant happening to him. I would make a similar comment for his expedition to Avaria, even if this time he is escorted by another rider and expert scout.

Another is that the author develops some of the threads of the Roman plot, and in particular connections with Monte Cassino and the Lombard Principality of Benevento, but then seems to drop them and nothing more is heard about them. I will not mention anything more about this point to avoid spoilers.

Anyway, these two little glitches were both relatively minor. They did not prevent this book from being a fascinating read and attracting a strong and fully deserved four stars. As mentioned in this title’s review, I very much hope there will be a sequel. Perhaps something involving Sigwulf with the Danes and/or the Slavs this time? Or an embassy to Constantinople perhaps?

At Once Uplifting and Troubling

As someone who has loved and studied ancient Egypt all her life, I was excited to come across this book. Even though the writing style was not exactly to my taste, and there were too many passionate repetitions of her feelings vs. other people's more limited perspectives, I kept reading because much of what the author says struck a chord inside me, and there were some fascinating stories involving people she met and what they told her (concerning Ayurvedic medicine, for example.) There's no doubt the author was an intelligent, sensitive, creative and all-around wonderful human being. And yet... something didn't feel quite right; I was finding it increasingly difficult to suspend my disbelief when I got to the part where she supposedly remembers a past life in ancient Egypt in at once astonishing, and vague, detail. Then certain passages really began to bother me: "...And so it has come about that this animal-like material race of cave men is experimenting with divine laws, growing mightier and more powerful until the time comes for it to begin ruling the earth. Before leaving the earth, however, the higher race had to implant its special powers in the lower race. Through the operation of the laws of heredity, this will enable the lower race...to rise out of matter again..." Apparently, the Sons of God, those who were left after what sounds like the destruction of Atlantis, interbred with a lesser breed of human being, the so-called cave men, and created the ancient Egyptian race that built the pyramids. "'Father,' I ask... 'Didn't the daughters of the Sons of God also take husbands from among the sons of men? Why have only the Sons of God begotten children with the daughters of men?' '(Because...)God still remains pure if he begets children with a daughter of the sons of men. But the blood of a pure bred daughter of God would become mixed blood if she were to marry one of the sons of men. From then on she would be mixed and so would her children.'" I won't even go there!

Suddenly, I simply could not suspend my disbelief any longer. I didn't feel I was truly in ancient Egypt listening to ancient Egyptians speak. I'm the first person to believe the ancient Egyptians were, in the very Old Kingdom, privy to spiritual knowledge and powers that petered out in the later dynasties, but this wisdom of theirs was both spiritual and sensual, and the author makes her views on sexuality painfully clear--the only reason for sex is to breed the next generation because one must renounce sex in order to channel its energy into spiritual organs, so to speak, which otherwise cannot develop to their fullest. No ancient Egyptian would have split sexuality and spirituality in such a fashion. Suddenly, I was reading a book written by a 20th century European imagining a life in ancient Egypt. Then I read this highly disturbing paragraph: "When absolutely constant and completely impartial love radiates from you to all creatures, your love will never again be mixed with personal inclinations or antipathies. You will consider everything from the standpoint of the whole,and when the interests of the whole community are at variance with those of individual persons, you will unhesitatingly defend the cause of the group with ruthless disregard for the interests of individuals..." What?! Did Elisabeth Haich and Ayn Rand have tea one day? The quest for "pure" spirituality, the need to rise above material desires, to transcend emotions and passions, is NOT ancient Egyptian or, in my passionate opinion, healthy. God took flesh for a reason, dare I believe to enjoy Itself? Really iffy theories of a superior race breeding with cave men (cosmic eugenics) chauvinist biology and almost fascist, definitely cold-blooded attitudes to "mere" individuals... none of these things belong in a book about spiritual initiation. A book like this is at once fascinating and dangerous because too many ethnocentric perspectives are confusingly mixed in with spiritual truths. Please, read with a grain of salt.

Explains every question about god, spirit, life and death.

I just happened to go to a psychic and she told me that my spirit guides told me I should read this book. My spirit guide said that it would explain all the questions I have ever had about god, where I came from, and my past lives. And boy did it ever. The book goes in to great detail about birth, life, death, reincarnation, zodiacs, and so much more. I recommend it to anyone who is confused about god, religion or their spiritual well being. The content of this book will explain everything. I read every word in two days and accepted it as truth, not fiction.

Enlightening Must-Read

I, like many others, was told I had to read this book. I purchased it within days and literally inhaled the wisdom and truth that unfolded from its pages. I have just begun my spiritual journey in earnest and this book has pushed me further than any other reading has thus far. I felt I had lived it. as often I knew what the author would say before reading the printed words. I have since recommended it to others and found out it is no longer in print...as it turns out I picked up the last copy in a Tri-city area. I knew then I was chosen to receive this knowledge and I know I will refer to its guidance for my lifetime and plan to share it with as many as I can so we can all be a part of healing our souls and bring our lives closer to our creator...This novel has influenced me in a positively spiritual way.

This edition of On the Other Side of the Garden of Eden only differs from the previous two by the addition of those examples. At times, it may appear that the information given in this book is one-sided because it does not deal with how a husband should act. Contrastingly, it reveals how a wife can live her life to the glory of God, even if her husband never functions as God’s Word declares he should. This third edition of the first and second editions of On the Other Side of the Garden incorporates much of the information contained in Virginia’s sequel, Victorious Women. Illustrations were provided in that book based on real-life examples of women who had applied God’s principles taught in the previous editions. These illustrations will encourage even the most apprehensive woman that she too can benefit from obedience to God’s Word; if not here on earth, in eternity. The manuscript is laid out in three sections. • Section one states the principles of Christian womanhood solely from the Bible’s perspective. It establishes the fact that God created the woman and designed her for His specific purposes. By carefully exploring the Scriptures as it relates to His plan, a woman will clearly discover what it reveals about her uniqueness, importance, responsibilities, and privileges. • The second section alerts Christian women to the consistent and intentional attacks against biblical womanhood in America over the past fifty plus years. It then carefully documents the sources of this anti-biblical position. • Finally, Section three describes applications for practical living. This section expounds on the biblical foundations presented in section one and applies them to the woman’s real life. The On the Other Side of the Garden has been affectionately called, “A Christian woman’s basic boot camp,” and “The best book I ever cried through.” But, it has helped save many marriages and families.

This book has changed my life--allowed me to fully understand God's design for my life.
