Interesting, but fairly inaccessible
By Amazon Customer
Layout is one of the first stages of the traditional animation process. It takes the unbridled creative ideas of the storyboards and turns them into properly composed scenes. Layout is also likely the most under-represented aspect of the 2D animation process when it comes to books. Unfortunately "Layout and Composition for Animation" by long time Disney veteran Ed Ghertner is a brief and somewhat muddled take on the subject.
This book is a lightning fast read; one that can be easily finished in a couple hours. This is due partly to the expectedly large number of picture, but also just being very short, at just over 200 pages. It wouldn't be out of line to expect a book twice as long as this.
It also wouldn't have hurt for this book to be a bit larger in the other dimensions. There are countless drawings where it's hard to read what's going on because they cross the gutter between the pages.
This book reads more like a manual for Disney trainees than something released for the general public. Little, if any, of the jargon is explained, there's essentially a different topic every page or two that are all loosely grouped into chapters and as a whole it's largely inaccessible to most readers. You really need to have a decent amount of pre-existing knowledge on the subject to get the most out of this book.
In fact the entire concept of layout in this book is poorly defined. Much of the early pages read more like they're about storyboarding than layout. This really could've used an introductory chapter, or at least a forward from one of Ghertner's Disney colleagues, to explain exactly what layout is and what the goals and responsibilities of a layout artist are. There is content of that sort in the very last chapter, but it covers the entire animation workflow and doesn't explain the process very well.
There's also a companion website for this book that's only mentioned on the back cover, but all it seems to have is a few more pictures with no text to accompany them.
The easiest way to handle this subject would be taking a short scene from storyboards to final layout, showing all the steps and considerations taken along the way. Sadly this book never does that.
Hans Bacher's book Dream Worlds: Production Design for Animation wasn't really about layout, but the snippets in it that deal with composition are far more accessible and informative than this.
If you're truly interested in learning more about layout, you're probably best served tracking down Brian Lemay's book on the subject. It's not perfect and a bit outdated, but far more useful and indicative of the layout process.

Good Basic Introduction
By V. Hutson
This book is a good introduction to some of the basic concepts of layout and design. As a 2-D artist, I was familiar with most of the concepts such as the importance of thumbnails, research, perspective, composing, path of action, lighting and shadows. However, the information on scene/sequence and the camera was new to me.
The large text and many illustrations make the book easy to read and to understand . . . but it also makes it seem more like a book for younger aspiring artists rather than the serious adult.
An earlier reviewer indicated that they felt like they were reading a Disney introductory manual on animation--this is something I also felt.

Seems like author was in an extreme hurry
By Gets Around
I'm an artist who can draw but who knows little about animation. This book must average about 20 words per page. There's so little information, it seems like the author is not really thinking about how to make the reader understand anything, but rather is thinking about how tersely he can get through this chapter. Nice pictures and classy print job, but extremely uninspiring, I wonder if anybody has really learned anything practical from this. It's more like an homage to himself than any kind of instructional book.
